Question Strep Throat/Antibiotic Question

Hi, which antibiotics are normally prescribed for strep throat? I have a bad sore throat with white spots on my tonsils. Went to the DR and I was told it was a sinus infection. My sinus do not hurt at all. And I don't think I have any symptoms of a sinus infection. I was prescribed antibiotics. And hopefully there the same ones that would treat strep throat if that is what I have. I just don't normally think a sinus infection causes white spots on the tonsils?

Re: Strep Throat/Antibiotic Question

Yes, unfortunately you can get a sore throat from a sinus infection. The mucus from the nose drains down into the throat and carries the infection with it. Most sore throats are viral infections and antibiotics are useless against viruses, but if it's actually strep throat, it's usually treated with cephalosporin type antibiotics.

Re: Strep Throat/Antibiotic Question

Hi there, did you get a rapid strep test done? You should insist on both rapid strep and a test to be sent out to a lab. Both can be done in the office.

Re: Strep Throat/Antibiotic Question

Most antibiotics which will work for a sinus infection will also work for strep. As a matter of fact once when one of our children had an infection the ped knew it was either a sinus infection or strep (symptoms as another poster mentioned are often similar) he decided to forgo the strep culture since he said if it was not strep he would be on antibitoics for the sinus infection anyway. He was on amoxicillin. All of the penicillin antibiotics will be effective for both.
