Unhappy beta blocker?!

i was prescirbed a beta blocker - toprol xl extended release after i had to go to the er in teh ambulance and my heart rate per minute was 220 andn then up in the 100s. they think i may have svt. i have to go to a cardiologist. they gave me one pill yesterday. i havent taken it tonight yet. my heart hasnt been racing tonight. its been in the 80s. so i am wondering if it is still safe to take when your heart is NOT racing. cause it says to take everynight at bedtime.
