Please Help - Drug Question

Hi everyone,

My rheumatologist, gives me (at this moment), Skelaxin, Ultram, Prednisone, Methotrexate, and Relafen. Sometimes the dosages change and the drugs are added or minused. Like I just started the Methotrexate about 2 1/2 wks ago. And will up my dose in about 2 weeks. I expect that she will slowly cut down on the Prednison.

This is my question. Even tho I take all of these drugs and some others from other doctors for other reasons, my aches and pains and inflammation and stiffness are still there somewhat. Do any of your know if I could substitute Hydrocodone for the Ultram and keep taking the other pills? This is important. I know that I cannot take the Ultram and the Hydrocodone both, but thought maybe I could substitute for a week or so.

Let me know what yall think - it is for a special occassion. My daughters wedding in Jamaica.

Thanks.

Re: Please Help - Drug Question

Many doctors do prescribe hydrocodone instead of Ultramn on a regular basis, it's not an issue of subsitution it's an issue of better relief. (You must make sure they are prescribed for you by your doctor and he or she understands all the current medications you are on).
Hydrocodone is stronger than Ultramn and may provide better relief but it can also cause stomache pains and you can not take additional acetominophen type products with it. Your prescribing doctor and or pharmacist should advise you of this when prescribing it anyhow.
Also do not drink while taking either medication, especially the hydrocodone. This can lead to over sedation and even death.

Also since you'll be in Jamaca there's a good chance as a whole you may feel better. Tropical environments seem to be more friendly on arthritis than non tropical so hopefully you'll feel great for your daughters wedding.

Enjoy the trip!!

Re: Please Help - Drug Question

Hi Kissa,

Thanks for the information. I appreciate all the help I can get. I had not thought about Jamaica being better for my arthritis! That might be true!!! :>

I guess in a month or so, I will ask my family dr. if he will give me some hydrocodone just for that week. He has prescribed it before for a twisted ankle and a frozen shoulder, so he might.

Thanks again.

Re: Please Help - Drug Question

I have RA, fibro, and two herniated discs in my back. I had had back surgery, also.
I take pain meds, I know some people whose doctor prescribed Ultram, then hyrdo for breakthrough pain. I was prescribed ultram a while ago and it did nothing for my pain, but did make me a little sleepy. I take hydro, I could not have a semi-normal life without them. I have never taken more than the recommended dose, I figure it is the same with being a diabetic and having to take insulin to control their disease. I also am allergic to all anti-inflammatory medication, which also makes it hard to treat me without pain medication. I do take methotrexate weekly and it helps, but I still experience pain with it, my fibro and my back.
Bless all of us in pain and help us have a good day, and to appreciate what we still can do.
