Concerta for adults?

I am 25 years old, and have been put on Concerta for my ADD. I was taking Adderoll, but it gave me severe migraines. I don't really know anything about this drug, Concerta, so I have been reading the message boards. I am aware that everyone is different, therefore some drugs work for some people, etc., but I keep reading about how Concerta seems to take a while to work? What about weight loss/decreased appetite? If you are familiar with this drug, Concerta, please write back and let me know your experience.
Thanks,
Corinne

Re: Concerta for adults?

I've only been taking Concerta (18 mg) for a couple of weeks (24 y.o.), but it has helped-mostly settled me down. I get tired on it,but I'm a very sleepy person anyhow. I first was MORE hungry, but now I tend to have a slightly smaller appetite than I used too_unfortunately weight loss hasn't occurred with the decrease-maybe because I don't fidget like I did (my form of exercise). It may be other factors, but I seemed to notice things were better 1-2 weeks after I started it, but I have never been on any stimulants before.

Re: Concerta for adults?

Concerta is the exact same medication as Ritalin (methylphenidate) but is formulated so that it is longer-acting. As such, it take it a little longer to kick in when you take it in the morning. It does work, however, from the first day you take it. There is no need to build up blood levels like has to be done with Strattera.

That said, though, it isn't uncommon for it to take several days to get over the side effects and feel that it is working at it's peak.

When I tried Concerta, I did experience some reduced appetite and lost a little weight - not nearly as much as I needed to, but a little. I had mild headaches the first few days that soon disappeared.

Does that help?

Re: Concerta for adults?

Corinne
I was diagnosed with adult add about 2 years ago. I was originally put on Concerta and 10mg Ritalin. I found the Concerta to be helpfull at first but after a while I began to experience signs of depression. I saw a news story that Concerta had been linked to depression and suicide so I discussed it with my doctor and she switched me to Ritalin LA. (extended release) From my understanding they are all basicly the same but I found that the Ritalin LA worked better for me than Concerta. But like you said, everyone is different. For me, it didn't take a long period of time for the Concerta to kick in, it worked for me almost immediatly. Again, Concerta worked great for me for about a year or so, so maybe it will for you too. Best way to find out is to just try it. Good luck.

Re: Concerta for adults?

I've been on Concerta for about 3 years, and it's been a winner so far. Dosages have been either 54 mg in the morning or else a combination of 36 mg in the am and 10 mg of methylphenidate (ritalin) at 5 or 6 pm. I'm 45 and was diagnosed just a few years ago with inattentive ADD. A nice thing about all of these med options is that they're fast into your system and fast out ... if it doesn't seem like one is the right one for you (everybody's different), you and your doctor can adjust quickly.
