Wait a minute! Why not losing weight?

For the last six months (after a surprise blockage then stent) I started exercising and changed the diet. I was not overweight so I went into the lifestyle changes with heart health in mind, not weight loss. That's why I'm slow to realize that despite the total diet change and exercising, I haven't lost one single pound in six months. I was 100% sedentary before the stent, now walk briskly almost 2 miles per day on the treadmill. I used to eat cheeseburgers, steaks, gobs of cream cheese and mayo, etc., now I eat chicken, fish. I weigh exactly the same as I did six months ago. How could this be?

Re: Wait a minute! Why not losing weight?

What medications are you on? There are some heart meds that cause weight gain/retention, such as beta blockers.

You may want to see a nutritionist. It's possible to eat a low fat diet and still consume too many calories. You could also think about seeing an endocrinologist as there are hormonal conditions that make weight loss difficult.

Do remember that there is a difference between being overweight and unfit and being overweight and being fit. Even if you remain overweight, exercise by itself makes a dramatic difference in your health outcome.

I am on a beta blocker medication. Still, no wonder dieters get discouraged.

The beta blocker is probably the culprit then. Weight gain is a very common side effect.

KEEP EXERCISING through. It reduces your chances of further health problems even if you don't lose weight, and it may prevent you from gaining additional weight!

Would Accupril (ace inhibitor) do the same thing? What about about Lipitor?
