back pain with osteoporosis?

Hi,
Does anyone know is back pain is related to osteoporosis? My Dexa Scan last week showed that my Osteopenia is now Osteoporosis in the spine. ( I have been on Actonel for 15 months!) Last night I even dreamt that I had such back pain that I was asking the Dr. for an MRI. I woke up quite a few times with bad back pain! I guess that's why I was dreaming about it!
Any suggestions or comments would be appreciated!

Re: back pain with osteoporosis?

Hi... many many things can cause back pain. And it is different from one person to another.. Back pain can come from arthritis, bulging discs, and even tight muscles that can spasm. And a million other things.. Best thing to do is to ask your Dr to figure out what it is, and if the pain is really bothering you, then I would get that MRI..

May God bless you..

Re: back pain with osteoporosis?

If you have any compression fractures from the osteoporosis, yes, there will be a lot of pain. So far, I have had 3 and they have been very painful. It takes a long time (at least for me) for them to halfway heal. Before I had the fractures, I had no back pain at all.

Re: back pain with osteoporosis?

Kathy,
How did you know that you had the compression fractures? Would they have shown on my Dexa Scan? Probably not-- I'm guessing. Did you have Xrays or an MRI? Do you take Actonel? Thanks for the info!

Re: back pain with osteoporosis?

Elpher,

I wish that I could answer that question for you! I as well have osteoprosis and have often wondered the same thing. I had osteopenia, and even taking the calcium didn't seem to stand up to the steroid injections I guess, because thats the only thing that I can think of for the reason that it went into osteoprosis so fast.

I do love these boards though. Everyone has a story or two, or three, or more and the information that is traded and the experiences shared, is so informative and lets you know that your not alone!

Take care and best wishes to you,
Bernie
