Question Prednisone & Weight Gain?

Starting soon, I will be taking Prednisone, 20 mg daily, for a suspected auto immune disease that invovles double vision.

I would appreciate hearing from anyone regarding weight and Prednisone. Or, other side effects from it. I am hoping that calorie and salt control can help in avoiding weight gain. Is this true?

How effective was the medication in helping with the health issue.

Thank you,
Sara

Steroids cause an increase of appetite and also fluid retention. Be sure and keep sodium level down and keep tight control of your appetite. It will slip up on you without realizing you are eating more, thus, extra pounds very quick.
Ask your doctor about taking a diuretic to help offset fluid retention.

Re: Prednisone & Weight Gain?

Misty,
Thank you SO much for the information. I certainly will ask the doctor for a prescription for a diuretic. I will start paying very close attention to the sodium levels on the labels and also toss the salt shaker and keep lots of fruit and vegtables around the house. I really appreciate your reply.

Re: Prednisone & Weight Gain?

You don't say how old you are, but that you're going to be taking prednisone for an auto immune problem. Make sure you have the doctor watch your blood sugar levels, have an eye doctor watch your eyes for cataracts, and if you're older that you watch out for stress fractures. I don't want to scare you, but I took prednisone for a long time and it did a lot of damage. The problem is that it works wonders too.

Good luck

Re: Prednisone & Weight Gain?

Not sure how helpful this will be, but I had to take 40mg a day for 3 days...first day I couldn't sleep and when I did sleep anything little thing woke me. I was hyper for the whole 3-4 days I was on it and didn't sleep much at all. I ate a little extra, but because I couldn't sleep, I tryed to tired myself by doing extra exercise, which I think countered the extra food.
