Unhappy Esophogitis(GERD) heartburn......

Hello, Boy I am glad that I found this forum. Have searched high and low for some info on GERD. Severe acid reflux. I had an upper GI about 1 month ago. Boy am I glad that is over!!!!! That was the worst. I have been having breakthrough heartburn even with taking prescribed medication Zantac. Dr told me to come back and he'd give me the proton inhibitor pump instead and I plan on it. Any info on these? Also been having sore throats and I know that it is because of the acid reflux. Have read some other info on other boards about what not to eat. Problem is, that don't leave much on the menu. Can anyone tell me whats good to eat and whats not? I appreciate it so much. This acid reflux thing really really bites!

You should try and avoid large meals and have more frequent meals, you should avoid meals before lying down. Cutting out caffeine, chocolate, peppermint, alcohol, spicy foods (those containing, for example, peppers, onions, and garlic). Foods containing acid (those containing tomato products and citrus fruits and juices), Milk (in excess) and fat (especially fat) in the diet can help. So can over the counter antacids. Rolaids are good. You can take up to 4 at a time. Wear looser fitting pants as tight pants cinch you around the middle and push acid back up.

Thanks so much for replying to my message. I appreciate you taking the time to give me some advice. Can I still take over the counter antacids with the prescription Zantac? I know not to eat tomato's but does that exclude spaghetti sauce, pizzs and things my family love to eat? I hate this!!! Forgive me for ranting. I quit coffee after a whole night awake with problems and nasecous feeling I had all night. I heard on another board that low card diet is good for GERD. So what do you do, eat just meat all the time, everything has carbs in it. I am so confused cause my Dr didn't take time to give me info on what not to eat and what is to eat. I was hoping that someone could help me. I appreciate your advice. Thanks.

If you keep a food diary, you can identify alot of the things that bother you. And yes the tomato thing means pizza, spaghetti too. I know, bummer

If things don't start getting better for you soon, yes I would go back for the proton inhibitor pump drugs. Then once on those it would be time to really start adjusting your diet. Surgery can sometime fix this problem but is a last resort if a diet fails.

This site here gives you basic diet guidelines.

I have alot of heartburn trouble but not true, diagnosed GERD. The things that bother me are, anything with any type of tomato sauce. Donuts kill me Anything with alot of fat. If I wear tight pants I'll get heartburn. Eating alot at once. Eating and laying down. I take rolaids like candy. They seem to work best and in a short amount of time and yes it's ok to take them with the zantac or the ppi's. I still eat pizza now and then even when I know it's going to bother me. I just load up on zantac first and rolaids after but it's worth it sometimes

Unhappy

Hello, I appreciate your advice. YES, This GERd thing is a real bummer. I mean pizza is one of my favorite foods and sometimes I will end up just eating it and suffer. I bought some Gaviscon and it seemed to help me, I took it before bed. My Dr is away for Thanksgiving vacation, when he gets back I plan on asking for the aciphex he planned on giving me if the Zantac didn't take care of the problem totally. The only really bothersome thing for me is, even though I took the Gaviscon on top of the Zantac I still had a very sore throat this morning. I read somewhere cause of all the acid churning up that is what causes this. I am worried the acid is going to wear a hole in my throat.
