And should I use a back up method while I'm waiting to start the new pack, or am I okay since I'm having my period now (just like I do on the sugar pills). Anyone know?
Any advice is appreciated.

If you started your "period" in the days you missed the pill, it is probably not a real period, just breakthrough bleeding, so you are probably not "fine on the protection front". Use backup, at least til you take 7 more pills correctly. I hope this helps. If you are on a different brand of birth control search on google (<insert brand name here> package insert) and look for the info on the manufacturers website.
***Here is what my package insert for
KARIVA (MIRCETTE) says to do: "If you miss 3 or more active pills in a row in the first 3 weeks: If you are a day 1 starter-throw out the rest of the pack and start a new pack that same day. If you are a sunday starter-Keep taking 1 pill every day until sunday. On sunday, throw out the rest of the pack and start a new pack that same day. You may not have your period this month but this is expected. However if you miss your period 2 months in a row, call your healthcare provider because you might be pregnant. You may become pregnant if you have sex in the 7 days after you miss pills. You must use another birth control method (such as condoms, foam, or sponge) as a back-up method for those 7 days" <source:
