Abnormal Pap Smear, Dysplasia

I found out I had HPV the strand that causes genital warts. I had a very mild case only having 5-8 warts. I took aldara and they cleared up right away. Well I went and had a pap smear and they said everything was good but I had signs of dysplasia. I didnt know what that was so I asked and she said it was inflammation? Is that true? When I looked it up online it said something about cervical cancer? Should I be worried? Im scared of what is going to happen next!

Re: Abnormal Pap Smear, Dysplasia

Dysplasia is the word used for the cell changes that happen before cancer develops. There are various stages of cell change on the road to cancer. If they catch the cell changes while they are still dysplasia, they can remove them and prevent them from becoming cancer.

Re: Abnormal Pap Smear, Dysplasia

Does that mean getting rid of them by freezing them off or some other treatment, and do they usually do that after my 3 month revisit?

Re: Abnormal Pap Smear, Dysplasia

They can get rid of them by freezing them off or by removing them with a laser or surgically. The treatment they choose depends on how severe and how dow deep the dysplasia is. Freezing is really only for mild dysplasia.

If you have mild dysplasia they probably won't treat you at all because it often goes away by itself. But if it starts to get worse, they'll choose a treatment for you.
