question about stopping meds?????

i have multiple food and respiratory allergies alon with asthma. been taking zyrtec and singulair on a daily basis for aound 4-5 years. had to stop 10 days ago because i was having a nuclear thyroid scan and they told me no antihistamines(i know singulair is not one). well the first 3-4 days i thought i was going to die. everything from years ago came back. asthma attacks, itchy eyes, sore throat you name it i had it. well in the last 2 days everything has stopped. i am debating with myself whether or not to start taking everything again since i feel fine and have no allergy or asthma symptoms.could i have been taking all of this for years and not needed it? maybe the beginning few days of being off everything was my body getting back to normal. any advice?

Re: question about stopping meds?????

I would suggest going and getting some allergy testing done to see if there are any specific allergies..if any then only take the medicine when you really need it...I took allergy medicine for years on a daily basis..I underwent a series of testing to determine which allergies were my main problem if any...I found that I really didn't need as much medication at certain times of the year for several years...then my body changed and I developed later in life more severe allergies...I was told that your body gets immune to some allergens and then others become a problem...my granddaughter had bad allergies living on east coast...she moved to the west coast and she is now fine....so testing will really let you know what your body needs if anything and when...

Re: question about stopping meds?????

Had food and respiratory allergy testing done around 5 years ago. Have multiple ones that's why i was told to take a zyrtec everynight to keep it all under control. my asthma is allergy and excercise induced. need my inhaler very rarely. for a fact they usually expire before even half used. the allergies didn't occur until i was 45 and within 6 months after my daughter passed away. reading a bereaved parent booklet they said the most common illnesses of bereaved parents are ulcers and allergies. i am wondering if my body has somewhat gotten back to normal and the first 3 days of hell was a type of withdrawal from taking these drugs for so many years.

Re: question about stopping meds?????

I go for testing every 5 years to see what has changed...some times sooner if I am experiencing problems...A loss of a loved one or someone close can really upset the ole' hormones..now I have also been told that as "we females" go through "our change of live" our body does crazy things.. some earlier than others....now my skin is more sentive and my digestive tract to allergens than they were before...I was more respiratory a few years ago...so if you have the money or insurance I'd check to just see where you are at with the allergies...hey you might be lucky and have outgrown them...

Re: question about stopping meds?????

I have been on Allegra and Flonase for the last 8 years (Claritin 3 years before that). I also take Singulair and Astelin for my allergies. I had allergy testing about 10 years ago. I was treated with immunotherapy for grass, trees, weeds, molds, cats and dogs. A couple months ago my symptoms got really bad. I went back for allergy testing to find out if I had developed new allergies. It was frustrating to go through a large box of kleenex in two days when I was on 4 meds for allergies. Imagine my surprise when I found that the immunotherapy was still working for some allergies and weren't for others. I was delighted to find out my tree and weed allergies had lessened in severity. I did find out that my grass, mold, cat and dog allergies had gotten worse and were as bad as you could get. I was glad I had gone back in so I know where I stand throughout the year for allergy severity. I am debating on whether or not to spend the money on futher immunotherapy for grasses or whether to just suffer next year. The doc said he didn't think more immunotherapy for the animals would help.

By the way, I had to go off all the antihistimines for a week before the testing (in prime grass season no less). I was surprised that my allergies weren't worse than they were, but I broke out in hives all week. This was strange for me because I never get hives. Anyway, I went back on all the meds because it was grass season, but I am considering working with my PCP to cut back some in the fall.
