dry cough

I have had a cold for over a week, my nose is now clear but where i was coughing up all sorts of icky stuff (quit smoking three days ago, so was expecting that) it has now turned into a dry cough that i can constanly feel in my throat and i have pains in my side and my lower back.
I went to the doctors and she said that my chest was clear, and gave me some ibuprofen to take which i think is giving me acid coz i can now feel that too :/
How long should i leave it before i go back and get it checked out again ?

Re: dry cough

Well, I'd give it time, but if it doesn't clear up, you need to look at acid reflux as the cause. In particular, "laryngopharyngeal reflux", which causes the dry cough - which is caused by acid irritating your larynx.

It's treatable with 2 doses per day of a Proton Pump Inhibitor like Nexium or Aciphex.

The pains in your chest and side also indicate reflux, so that combined with the dry cough really suggest it.

How long have you had this dry cough and chest pain for?
