Acid Reflux

i have LPR acid reflux (kind that gets way up in your throat). didnt have any breathing issues until my reflux started. one of my main symptoms of it is shortness of breath and breathing probs..i found that albuterol helps a bit. is it a normal side effect to get shakey from it? is it anything serious? got flovent from my regular doctor, while waiting for my pulmonologist appt. should i start the flovent as well?

Re: Acid Reflux

i started the flovent. the flovent seems to help more than the albuterol..idk much about asthma. isnt it caused by something, like allergies, or something? or do you just get it? idk if reflux is the prob or not, but didnt really start getting probs before i had reflux. also, i used to kinda suck my gut in alot, a bad habit, for a long time. could that have something to do with my shortness of breath/heavy breathing? i have a pulmonologist appt this monday. maybe something will show something. cant take this anymore. barely have enough air to talk

Re: Acid Reflux

Asthma can be triggered by allergies. Oddly enough, I have acid reflux, I have severe asthma and I can't help you because I am on too much morphine for my back pain.

Acid reflux, what are you taking for it? Mylanta is cheap and good. The pulmonary doctor can really straighten you out (I hope).

Albuterol can make most people shakey. It opens up the airways...there is always a specific word for these things...avioli or something like that.

Acid reflux can cause some VERY BAD things. Take care of it. I am 60 and was pretty normal until recently, then the wheels seem to fall off.

Flovent is one of the very few meds I have not taken. I have, at my peak
about 6 months ago, been on 23-25 prescriptions at one time. about 12 were
for Asthma.

Ask for a Peak Flow Meter. Most dr. have a box full of them, free. I have 2.
At the dr. office I could hit 500-550 at peak. Same at home.

The Pulmonologist may schedule you for a series of tests. They are not painful.

After ALL my testing, I am asthmatic and I have sleep apnea. The doctor will probably schedule you for a sleep study.

Last thing...the dr. may give you the allergy test where they do skin pricks
and so on. I hated it, but it really was necessary. I am allergic to everything now...chuckle.

Good luck, let us know how it goes......

Re: Acid Reflux

i do everything there is to do for reflux. i'm on 2 40mg nexium a day, 150zantac, and im extremely careful and follow the reflux rules strictly..the burning throat is a bit better, but the breathing probs are still there.. EXTREMELY short of breath, and feels heavy all the time. sometimes worse than others, sometimes a little better..with the flovent and albuterol, its a lot better but its still there..i've been experimenting for months, cant figure out if the breathing is from the reflux or not, but it started around the same time..started out as it feeling as if i couldnt get a deep enough breath for a few months often, now that feeling is gone, its just im always short of breath and feels heavy. im 20 yrs old, never had any breathing problems in my life. all this started 7-8 months ago. hopefully they will know something. have seen so many doctors in the last 7 months, none know what the problem is

Re: Acid Reflux

I developed my asthma and acid reflux/lpr symptoms at the same time. This was around January 2002. (I had some minor symptoms before then, but didn't know what it was.) Since that time, I have been on a variety of regimens to find the right combination that gets both things under control at the same time. Every time the symptoms of one get worse, they seem to trigger symptoms of the other. Also, I have allergies and every time I get a sinus infection, it triggers the asthma symptoms, which in turn trigger reflux symptoms. It is a tiresome circle--expecially because my symptoms for both are often the same.

A couple years ago, I found a Primary Care Physician who was willing to work with me and encouraged me to see her whenever I felt I needed to. (At one time, I went 9 times in one month.) I like working with her because she can make sure the items the individual specialists are giving me are working together.

Here is what is currently working for me. I take Advair 500/50 twice daily. (I occassionally cut back to 250/50 when it is better. The first year I was on Advair, I just used the 100/50. Many people find it effective.) I also take Singulair- primarily for asthma, but it helps my allergies too. I use Albuterol as needed--the need varies throughout the year. (Yes, I get shakey from this too.) For the reflux, I take Prevacid 2x/day. (I was on Protonix 1x/day for a couple years, but it never completely took care of the symptoms.) I have also increased my allergy meds each year also. Of those, I currently take Allegra, Flonase and Astelin.
