New here,but not to autism...

Hey everybody! My name is Angie, I'm the mother of two. The oldest is a thirteen year-old girl (normal) and a 12 year-old autistic boy. Our son has been on a host of meds since he was 6. We've tried risperdal, tenex, inderal, abilify, strattera etc. Right now he's on inderal (160 mg.) and abilify (2 mg.) a day. He's at least 5' 3" and weighs around 220 lbs.! and, he's prone to rages. Very hard to handle anymore and becoming a problem at school. My question is does anyone here have the same problems with their child and beginning puberty and all that good stuff! Please let me know if you've tried any other meds that might work better. Thanks so much for your time. Angie

Re: New here, but not to autism...

hi my son is 17 almost 18, he was awful between 11-16 i blame puberty, he was full of rage, he made my life hell, he would hit me with closed fist objects etc, i had to fight him back he is 6 foot and 250 lbs. he caused us a great deal of grief, enough that i wanted to die,no help meds were not helping, finally after a lot of med changes we got the right combination, seraquel, lamictal, depakote, remron, now he is an angel i still can't believe he used to be so violent, so hang in there it is going to be a very rough ride and do not fear him and stand your ground, i unfortuanatly had to punch my son in the face when he tried to stab me with a knife after that he realized that i have to fight back he stopped, it got so bad that even childrens services were called and came out to "investigate" and realized what i was up against and told me well at this point you have to defend yourself, he was real bad!but thru prayes and me wearing him out it got better and now he is just so sweet,SO HANG IN THERE it gets better, take care.

Re: New here, but not to autism...

Thanks so much for your reply. My nephew tried lamictal for his seizure disorder but broke out in the "rash". Ethan (our boy) has a dr. appointment tomorrow. She's fairly new on the case and wants to try him on Topamax again. He didn't really have much improvment on it before. I've heard that Keppra is a good one for rages, and then I just read that it can cause rages in children!? I"ve always said that I thought something for a mood disorder or bipolar would maybe help him. He's only been dx with autism. We're going to have some genectic testing done on him hopefully, his old dr. never thought that it was neccesary. Oh well, thanks and I'll suggest lamictal tomorrow and see what happens. Angie

Re: New here, but not to autism...

I have a 13 year old son with autism and adhd and as you said they have tried him on every medicine under the sun since he was 5 and seems some do help for a few months then its almost as if his body gets immuned to them and they stop working, right now hes on concerta 54mg..prozac 20mg and resperdial 3 mg,some days he does fine and others he is out of control so i know exactly how you feel,i use to cope with it but the last few months it's took a toll on me and i am on antidepressants and have been having panic attacks and cant sleep..i am just hoping someday i can find the right medicine to help my son.
