Question Questions about Paxil

Hi, I have been on Paxil (Paroxetine HCL) 20mg for a little over a year and a half for my anxiety I have had for years. Anyway I have recently been thinking I want to stop taking it. Honestly I cant even tell if it is doing anything for me or not. My anxiety isnt as bad as it used to be, but it is still there. I have also learned other ways to manage the anxiety better; so that may be why I dont know if the med is helping or not. I'm aware that 20mg is a rather low dosage and that I could increase the mgs but Im not interested in that. Anyway I know that I cant just go off the med cold turkey. One time about a year ago I went about a week without taking it and I started getting this zappy feeling in my brain. I still get that jolty feeling fairly often even though I take the paxil everyday. I have heard somewhere before that the jolty zap shock feeling in the brain is a side effect of paxil.

Have any of you experienced the jolty zap feeling in your brain? (I dont know anyother way to really describe the feeling)

And Have any of you that were taking paxil quit taking it? How did you do it? Did you just gradually lower your dosage?

Thanks.

Re: Questions about Paxil

Paxil was the most difficult SSRI for me to discontinue, but I was on a higher dose (60mg). I felt as if I was being electrocuted, then I felt like I had the flu---muscle aches, fatigue, dizziness. It was horrible. So I slowed down the taper. Ask your doc, but you may have to just break off pieces of pills and very gradually go off. Even with a gradual taper, people sometimes have symptoms, they just aren't as bad. When I slowed the taper way down, I still had some "electrocution" feelings but they were much less intense. I also had headaches, so I kept Tylenol and ibuprofen handy. If you really want to come off it, you certainly can, just be prepared to go as slow as you need to and realize that even doing that, you may have some strange symptoms (but they aren't dangerous). I do wish psychiatrists and all docs would make people more aware of how it feels to come off these meds. Again, talk to your doc. If you want to try a new med, sometimes they will overlap the two in small doses (but that has to be done carefully) until you're totally off the old drug. My brother came off an SSRI (he's now doing well on Luvox) and he called me in the middle of the night, very upset and told me he felt like someone was electrocuting his brain. We quickly discerned the problem was SSRI withdrawal (or, as the drug companies say "discontinuation syndrome"). He withdrew slower and was more comfortable. I know people in person and online and the majority of them who have come off an SSRI report this symptom, or symptoms like it. Best wishes.

Re: Questions about Paxil

Definetly do not go cold turkey. You MUST decrease your dossages gradually. I don't know if you did, but when I began taking Paxil, I increased my dose gradually. I'm only on 12.5mg. i started at 5, then 10, and then switched to Paxil CR and the lowest dose it comes in is 12.5mg. I forgot it for a week once and I had such bad attacks for about three days until my body leveled out again. Have you tried the Paxil CR? CR- Controlled Release... It helps stay in your body more. If you have other ways to deal with your anxiety, it might be good for you to stop taking it. You can always go back on it or even try a different medication if you find you can't handle being off it. Speak to your DR, they should help you and support helping you wean yourself off. Good Luck!

Re: Questions about Paxil

I had terrible withdrawal from Paxil. My doctor did not step me down properly. It took six weeks until I felt better. If you want to step down, try to get some Xanax or Klonopin to help you through the withdrawal and step down very slowly. Research how to taper off SSRI's successfully. Your doctor should be able to help with this and you could talk to your pharmacist. There are also dietary supplements that ease the SSRI discontinuation syndrome, like B vitamins and lethicin/choline. Good luck...just keep in mind it won't last forever.

Re: Questions about Paxil

Thanks for the replies. It is good to know that I'm not the only one that experinces the shocking jolt feelings in my brain. So far I havent contacted my doctor yet and am still taking the paxil. I think I will consult him though. So those of you who have tapered off of paxil, how long would you estimate that it took?
