How risky is using steroid eye drops like Alrex?

My right eye gets very red from outdoor allergies. The only thing that has worked is steroid eye drops like Alrex. I have it down to using one drop about every other day. That stuff is strong. I'm wondering how dangerous steroid eye drops are. I know using steroids can cause atrophy and I have read that the eye drops if the skin on your eye is thin can perforate it. I just wonder if using 1 drop every other day really is risky at all. It's such a small amount. Or are the drops they make now days safe and I don't have to worry about it?

They say you dhouldn't use steroid eyedrops for very long because it can thin out your lens. Now that you've got things under control, I would give Patanol another chance. Maybe use it alternately with the steroid drop, and then slowly wean yourself off the steroid.

Re: How risky is using steroid eye drops like Alrex?

I have skipped two days now without the steroid eye drops and my eye is still OK. I'm going to try to not use it for as long as possible. The allergist did say he thinks the inflammation is coming from my sinuses and if I keep using the steroid nasal spray it should help my eye. He wants me using the nasal spray long term though. I guess that is safer then a steroid eye drop.

I am afraid of using the Pantanol. I swear it seemed like it just made it worse in the long run.
