Hair Loss/Alcohol/Clonazepam

I like to have 2-3 glasses of wine a day and have recently been taking more Clonazepam than usual .05 mg per day.I notice I am losing my hair and it is getting thinner and thinner. When I wash my hair lots of strands come out then when I comb out my hair after my shower I lose more.I notice all through the day that I am picking off lots of hairs from my clothing.Could wine or Clonazepam or the mixture be the problem? Does anyone else have the same hair loss from any alcohol or anxiety drugs?

Hmmm, I don't know but I'm losing hair too. I take valium for anxiety and like to have a glass or two of wine at dinner. I've never heard of hair loss from anxiety meds, just SSRIs.

Do you have any other conditions which might contribute to hair loss, i.e. thyroid or PCOS?

Maybe do some hormone tests to check other causes.

Re: Hair Loss/Alcohol/Clonazepam

Cheeto3, I am also female and have been drinking more than I should. I often deal with stress by falling back on alcohol. I do not drink everyday, however. It is normally 2-3 days per week, but when I do drink, I drink until I am drunk. That usually means anywhere from 6-8 to maybe even more beers in a "night." I have, for the last month or so, been losing my hair. It comes out non-stop! I often wear it up in a clip because it is so disheartening to wear it down, and it just seems to stress me out more when I do...not to mention the embarrassement when it's down and I'm around friends. I'm constantly pulling hair out. It comes out when I run my fingers through my hair, when I brush/comb it, when I wash it...it has even been causing plumbing problems in our home because of all of the hair clogging the drain. I also suffer from anxiety and depression. I take Xanax, or alprazolam, daily to help with my anxiety and depression and sleeping disorder. I used to take an SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor) such as Effexor, but I stopped it some time ago when my husband and I were trying to have children. We discovered that I have PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) and that his sperm count was low etc., and we have basically given up on the whole baby thing. Anyway, I have similar issues going on in my life, and I happened to find your message post while searching Google. I would be VERY interested to know if you have any new information on your problem and also what the status is of your problem currently. My IM doc just took some blood and checked my CBC (complete blood count) and a TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone) and both were fine; however, I was very slightly anemic. I started taking a multivitamin a week or so ago, but I'm sure it will take quite some time to build up in my system (and I assume that drinking just washes away or depletes your body from the vitamins anyway). It's kind of a shoot-yourself-in-the-foot situation I presume. Well, if you get this, please respond.

Re: Hair Loss/Alcohol/Clonazepam

Hi Lolo1974:I have been checked by my Doctor too but I'm not sure what she checked.I know she checked thyroid but other than that she did the usual tests, I should know what they were.
I have been looking into hair loss and see that alot of people have been taking Saw Palmetto (make sure it is the extract) which I am going to get.I also bought Nioxin Shampoo,Conditioner and Scalp Treatment today. It cost me $142.26 canadian but I will pay whatever if it works.I purchased the #4 series which is for fine, chemically treated hair that there is "noticeable thinning"going on.I bought #3 series first but returned it as it is for fine, chemically treated normal to thin hair.I am 49 years old and it could be attributed to Peri-Menopause,taking the odd antianxiety pill and or alcohol.I have been on the SMART.com site that helps people with drinking addictions quit so I have gone 8 days without drinking.I did have a couple glasses of wine last weekend but that's it and that is better than I my usual 2-3 glasses of wine every day .I am trying to stop drinking and cut down on any anxiety pills I take.Try Nioxin,I know it is not cheap but maybe it will help over time.I am hoping after a couple of months I will see less hair loss.
hope this helps.
Cindy

Re: Hair Loss/Alcohol/Clonazepam

Hi, Cindy -

I just did a quick search for you and found some sites that list hair loss as a side effect of Clonazepam. It's listed under 'rare', but it is listed. You may be sensitive to side effects like me. I take Prozac and have hair loss from it, which is supposedly 'rare' with that med.
