Coffee?

Is real coffee off limits when you have high blood pressure?

Re: Coffee?

Research results are mixed. Some studies have shown an increase in BP from coffee, whether it was caffeinated or not. Some show a difference between the two. Some show little effect for regular coffee drinkers but larger effects for only occasional coffee drinkers. Some individuals have very large increases in pressure. The best I can suggest is to use a home BP monitor and do your own testing on how it affects you. Test before and after coffee consumption a number of times and take an average to rule out just normal variations. From what I've read, it would seem that taking your pressure about one-half to one hour after consumption of coffee would give you a good idea. Increases may be just temporary. However, for someone who drinks several cups throughout the day, "temporary" each time could still add up to many hours of increased pressure.

Re: Coffee?

THe secret is to get REALLY addicted, like me.
Then there's no effect on BP, in fact I can even have it go lower with a mug of coffee, presumably fromk the "relaxation effect."
