Is this true about diabetes???

Hello everyone,

I just had a quick question for anyone? Here are the stats:

Female, 45yr
60-70 pounds over weight
very active at work

1) Hx high cholesterol for 15-20 yrs (Taking 20 mg pravachol all these yrs)
2) suddenly dose had to be increased 2 yrs ago to 40 mg pravachol
3) husband is diabetic - He was told his diabetes was due to his weight increase of 45 pounds after quitting smoking. His labs always shows his Triglyceride numbers in the 80's range.
4) Suddenly 8 mo ago I developed diabetes & I argued with the Dr & said if I eat better & loose weight then it will go away naturally. She said no you are predisposed to it by a very strong family history of it. Dr. said it wouldn't matter how much better I ate or how much weight I lost that I would still be diabetic. Standing stern that lifestyle changes would not change my diabetes. She feels strongly about this because when my lab work came back my triglycerides was like almost 600 & she said they should be 100 or less. She put me on Tricore to lower triglycerides followed by lab work 4 mo later. The number was still in the 350 range. Is this the test that tells her I will be diabetic regardless what I do????

Is it true, no matter what I do I will still be diabetic??? I'm only on 500mg Glucaphage per day. Dr did tell me at that time that I will need more meds for sure but lets start at that. I see her in a week to follow-up. I'm also having trouble controlling my numbers too.

Have a good day!

You said your Dr. said you have a very strong family history of diabetes. Is it a close family member such as a parent or sibling? Have you tried losing weight and following a diet closely? I have been a diabetic for 31 years. I was diagnosed when I was 12, so I don't really know much about adult onset which yours is. Mine was juvenille onset. My suggestion to you would ne if you are not seeing an Endocrinologist (diabetic dr.) then at your next follow-up appt, I would ask to be set up with one. The endo can answer all your questions about your condition. It seems like maybe your dr. doesn't want to take the time to explain things or listen to you. You must always take a stand for your own health care and if you are having problems with a Dr. then try to find one that you are comfortable with and who will listen to you. Please keep us posted on the outcome. If any of this sounded harsh it wasn't meant to. Trina

Re: Is this true about diabetes???

Trinajean,

Thank you for replying and no you were not harsh, just direct...lol. Just wondering though. What difference would seeing an endo do vs seeing a family Dr in regards to diabetes?

I am now 40 lbs overweight not 70. I forgot to mention I took off 32 lbs recently in the last 3 mo...and it made no difference with my diabetes. I am continueing to put a lot of effort into getting this weight off regardless.

Re: Is this true about diabetes???

Your concern compels me to think that There will be lot People, suffering with confusion of either being a Pre Diabetic or With High BSL, but no Diabetes.

So a Natural & Simple Question is - What are other possible Diseases, reasons, factors & causes that can give reading of High Blood Sugur, While there can be No Diabetes ?

This one, can really clear many myths & confusions and bring Hopes to many, Who may have accepted the Diabetes, just because of Meter Showing High Blood Glucose, While the reason could be something else needing care & treatment.

Please tell & Share the facts as experienced to favor so many like me.
