antibiotic question

This is my daughters third day taking Augumentin for her double ear infections. She's still in a lot of pain. My question is, how long does it take for the antibiotic to kick in? You see, she had tubes in her ears and throughout her five yrs., I figured out zithromax is the only antibiotic that will work for her. The doctor said that augmentin was stronger. So I'm waiting.

Re: antibiotic question

I beleive that by now your daughter should be starting to feel better. Three days is certainly enough time for it to be working. It sounds like she has had a lot of antibiotics and may be resistant to the augmentin. I would call her Dr and ask them to switch it to another one.My daughter had similar issues with antibiotics but she dealt with chronic sinus infections, not ears. Good luck and hope your littel one feels better soon.

Re: antibiotic question

You can tell the antibiotics are working about two to four days after you begin taking them. I myself had a bad ear infection a couple months back and two days into the antibiotics I was feeling significantly better. By all means, do NOT have your child stop taking them just because she feels better. Otherwise, she'll become more resistant to that particular antibiotic, the infection will flare up again, and she'll require something stronger to knock it out completely. If the antibiotics have not kicked in for her by now, she may still need something more powerful. But for now, I would just say to keep up with the antibiotics as planned and maybe give her some kind of painkiller. If there is no improvement in the next 48 hours, I would suggest calling her doctor and asking what's going on and if a stronger medication is needed.

Re: antibiotic question

It should be working by now, even if only just a little bit. My son has tubes in his ears and still gets ear infections (bad ones - enough to cause partial hearing loss due to them). The only thing that works for him are the antibiotic ear drops, that way they go directly into the ear, like Tobramycin (I believe that's what it's called). Good luck and I hope she feels better soon.

Re: antibiotic question

Well it's her 4th day on the antibiotic. She's o.k. during the day, the nights are when it starts hurting her(of course). Now I'm concern with her hearing. It seems she's having trouble hearing me. Could it be possible for her eardrum to have busted? Could that be what the drainage was about? I have no idea about that. I don't know if her tube is still in there sideways. The doctor couldn't tell the other day because of all the fluid. She lost the tube in the other ear. And at one time the doctor said that the other one was in there sideways and if it didn't come out on it's own they would have to take it out. But she's been to the doctor plenty since then, surely they can see it. Right? She was given ear drops but it doesn't go down in that ear. It just stays on top. So, if she has anymore pain this weekend I'm going to take her back to the doctor, which is 75 miles away since we moved. But it is so hard to find one you can trust. Don't yall think so? Thanks for your replys, they've been helpful. If anyone can help me again, I'd appreciate it.
