pain meds

Hi All
I am set to have surgery on 12/26 on my right big toe joint. My question is,what pain meds do the drs usually prescribe? I can,t handle vicoden. Can I ask for darvocet, which I have had for shoulder surgery?
Thanks

Re: pain meds

I'm sure each doc has their preference on what they prescribe. My doc always gives me percocet. I also always take my pain meds with phenergrin.(sp). It keeps you from getting sick to your stomach. IT also makes you sleepy. I never take any pain meds without it. I'm sure you could ask him for whatever you know will work. good luck on your surgery. Can't imagain having surgery the day after X-mas. have a good holiday

Cool Re: pain meds

Thanks All
I'll call tomorrow and ask for some darvocet.
I didn't want to be hopping around on Christmas day (Santa Claus and all)
I had to get it in before the end of the year for insurance reasons.
Thanks again and everyone have a merry Christmas.

Re: pain meds

After my surgery, the doc gave me Tylenol with Codeine, which did nothing for the pain. The following week he switched me to Vicodin, which also did not help. Finally, he changed me to Darvocet which was a real improvement. I tend to be shy about asking any doc for stronger pain meds, lest he/she think I am some kind of junkie, but in retrospect, I should have been more assertive. Good luck with your surgery.
