Licensed Dietician???

Hi All,

My husband is diabetic. He takes pills that help him to keep it under control. His doctor (when he diagnosed him), did not send him for a couple of classes or meeting with a dietician. Don't Doctors usually do this, when someone is first diagnosed to help them learn how to eat correctly for diabetes???

Is it usually covered by insurance companys? His main problem is that sometimes he works really hard and sometimes not at all. It depends on the particular day. So, that makes it hard to eat correctly, because he will go low when working hard and high when not working much!

Please let me know your knowledge of this and your thoughts.

Thanks,

Wannabe

Re: Licensed Dietician???

All but 4 states have mandatory coverage for diabetes supplies and education. Insurance should cover meeting with a dietician.

Re: Licensed Dietician???

I am in Canada so the situation is probably different but it is surely just common sense that a doctor would either give you information about diet or tell you where to find it or better still send you to a dietician.
I live in rural Manitoba. I was sent to a dietician in a city about an hour's drive away from where I live. There was no cost except for my transportation. I assume it must be covered by our provincial health plan.
The dietician was helpful but information she provided is available on the internet I am sure. Diet and exercise are probably just as important as if not more important than medication as a means to control diabetes.

Re: Licensed Dietician???

My doctor didn't send me to one, but I requested it and he complied. It was a waste of time for me since she didn't know any more than I did and I thought her suggestions on the amount of carbs allowed was rather high. I learned what I know from a book and researching the internet. This board is very helpful.

Re: Licensed Dietician???

My husband was just diagnosed, given a prescription for pills, and told to come back in 3 months. That's the sum total of his "teaching".

I'm know what he should be eating, but I'm angry that doctors think just pushing some pills is the proper education.
