Should I Be Happy?

Greetings --

Back on 12/11, I had a fasting blood sugar of 137; at the time I also had an ear infection. Also, I take a beta blocker that increases the risk for diabetes and also I am under extreme stress at all times and my chloresterol is controlled with a statin.

So I worked on the problem with diet and exercise; the weight is now down to 149 from 162. I repeat the test, and the fasting blood sugar is now 110. The doctor calls with the "good" results when I am out and tells my sister to give me the "good news." No further action is conveyed to her. End of story.

Somehow, I don't feel happy with this number; I had hoped for something below 100 in the normal range.

Re: Should I Be Happy?

Sounds like pre-diabetes to me.

Thirteen pounds is not much weight loss. If you could lose 30, it would make a difference. You might want to try a different bp medication also. My doctor took me off atenolol and put me on Altace when I was diagnosed. You have done well though to get a pretty good drop in blood sugar. Keep working on it and you will probably do even better--it hasn't been that long. Muscle building with exercise takes time.

Re: Should I Be Happy?

Infections raise blood sugar levels. A fasting blood sugar of 110 is very good. It is concidered non diabetic. Diabetic would be 126 or above. However, these numbers do not mean very much. The A1C is the gold standard test for diabetes. It tests fasting and post meal blood sugar over a three month period and gives an average. The goal is to keep this number below 6, which is concidered non-diabetic. Also, it sounds like you might have metabolic syndrome, which in some docs minds is reason to treat for diabetes. Depends on the doc. Many docs are moving toward diabetic prevention with meds especially if there is metabolic syndrome.

Re: Should I Be Happy?

He would have to be pretty short for a weight of 132 to be a healthy weight for a man. It's probably not a good idea to tell someone how much weight they should lose when you have no idea how tall they are. Granted, if that is kilograms, a totally different story. Besides, ANY weight loss will make a difference with insulin resistance.

A1c is NEVER appropriate to diagnose diabetes. Under 6 does NOT mean no diabetes. Mine was 5.9 when I was diagnosed. And that's still almost an average bs of like 135, which obviously isn't normal.

A fasting of 110 isn't diabetes, but it's still not good. It's pre-diabetes.
