Adverse reaction to an antibiotic

I am just wondering if anyone else has experience with having to stop an antibiotic due to a reaction.

My labs are all normal but I had to stop the biaxin.

Stomach aches, nausea, pain in stomach, liver area etc.

Now my skin is mildly peeling like after a sunburn.

Does anyone know how long it takes to start feeling better. How long does it take to get the drug out of your system?

Re: Adverse reaction to an antibiotic

I had a strange reaction when I had been taking Doxycycline 400 mg for nearly 2 months. Got a strange rash over most of my body. My dermatologist thought Leukoclastic Vasculitis and ordered a bunch of tests. Nothing unusual, thank God (as some of the possible causes were pretty awful). My new LLMD said take a month off to let my immune system calm down. He put me on Minocycline (a cousin of Doxy), and within one day, the rash started to come back. Took nearly 2 weeks to dissipate the first time, and about a week the second time.

He put me on Benicar to reduce the inflammation and cytokine effects, and I got a few spots which come on, and fade within 2-3 days. He has me on that still, and Cefzil with Tindamax. I still get a few spots here and there, but he now thinks that the initial rash was a drug reaction, and the spots now are dieoff rashes.

Bummer, since I seemed to be tolerating the Doxy so well...and it was working. But now the Cefzil has kicked in and I can work/function again, aside from some minor herxing.

Re: Adverse reaction to an antibiotic

Hi malosp, welcome to the board!

What dose of Biaxin were you taking and how long had you taken it? Are you being treated by a Lyme knowledgeable doctor? Were you tested for all the co-infections ticks can transmit: Babesiosis, Ehrlichiosis (HME & HGE), Bartonella, and Mycoplasma? This is important. It is estimated that 60% of people who have Lyme are co-infected. It may affect treatment choice and progress.

Are you familiar with the Jarisch-Herxheimer Reaction (herx)? Often when people who have Lyme take antibiotics, their symptoms become worse or they get new ones. When the antibiotics kill the bacteria, toxins are released making them feel sicker. It can be scary when it happens, but it is a good sign the antibiotics are working.

Is your docotor going to prescribe another antibiotic?

Hang in there okay?

Re: Adverse reaction to an antibiotic

Hi Mal
Skin brushing is a very good treatment for Lyme as your body wants to expell toxins.

So as we brush we keep the pores clear, may be your skin peeling if it is not sore is your bodies trying to expell toxins and renew skin.

I have stopped my meds longest 4 weeks last nov, i became quiet ill, Sickness stomach bug tonsillitouse all reoccuring at the same time shortest 2 days.

A herx can be very uncomfortable, as i got used to them i would ride them through as they lasted around 2 to 3 days, start to finish.

At first it was hard to tell the difference, but as my lyme improved and i found i wasn't getting all symptoms together like when i peeked in illness, so i classed a herx as a time when i was having attacks of all symptoms.

As soon as I stop a drug apart from that month in November i always feel a relief in herx symtoms, not sure how long it takes for the drug to leave the body, i always start as soon as symptoms subside.

Some people do a one day off a week, i havent tried this one, so not sure if its any good to keep up a good fight.

Its amazing how much i discovered the body will tell you what it wants and when, it took me many years of suffering to realise it and a good llmd.

hope you find some relief soon.

hugs
Jules
