Please Help ADD and Violence

Hi I need some advice I have a 12 yr old nephew who only recently became very violent towards my sister he suffers from ADD. His parents are separated and he spends time in both homes. His dad continues to bad mouth his mum and he brings back all the abusive tones home. he has two sisters and a few days ago he threatened both girls and his mum with a kitchen knife and when confronted he threatened to use it on himself. Is this normal behaviour for ADD child????? I would really appreciate some advice as my sister is really at the end of her rope with him

NO, this is NOT normal behavior, ADHD or otherwise. I would encourage your sister to seek counseling.

If your nephew is on stimulants, it is possible that the medication is making his aggression worse. So, a call to the doctor is also in order.

Re: Please Help ADD and Violence

Is he on meds for ADD? We were just posting on a different thread about the weird feelings we get on Adderall. If he's on Adderall it may be a side affect. I seem to get very depressed and another poster became very irritated and angry. Although it seems that he's having a rough time in his life right now.
Just something else to consider.

Re: Please Help ADD and Violence

No, this is not normal. My son is ADHD/ODD. I have an event similar to this this past week. Threatening to hurt himself, although he said he would never do it. He also told me that the only reason he gave me the scissors is because his 3 yr. old sister was here. Upon calling a police officer over to talk to him, this was going on while i was on the phone with dispatch. Needless to say, he was bakeracted to the behavioral center, where he was admitted and stayed there for 2 and 1/2 days. they changed his meds.......he was on Concerta, Depakote and Trazadone. he is now on Concerta 36mg and Abilify 5mg.
After he was there for a day, him and i both signed a form saying that he was there willingly and not bakeracted. as to get released from being bakeracted, he would have to go in front of a judge, and they decide if he can leave.
He is also starting counseling on wednesday.....hopefully will figure out why he feels so angry about authority.
Please take this seriously!! I hated what i did for my son, but hopefully it will help him to change his outlook on things.
(((((((((((hugs))))))))))))
