back to work

After 8 years my a1c is 5.9 which i know is real great. My question is i am going back to work as a certified nurses aid and i have been told that the stress could set off my diabetes to run uncontrolled again. has anyone heard of this before can stress affect your sugar levels.

Re: back to work

I'm in nursing school and really don't have trouble controlling my blood sugars. You'll be fine once you adjust to the schedule and such. I need to reduce my basal insulin a little if it's a busy day, and sometimes find myself taking corrections through out the night. How do you manage your diabetes now?

Re: back to work

Stress CAN affect your bg. I have a somewhat stressful job and when I have a bad day, it does make my bg a little higher. I asked my diabetes educator about this and she really didn't have much to say other than manage your stress better, don't put yourself in stressful situations if you can avoid it. She even suggested finding another job. I have this condition called pay cheque dependancy, so that wasn't an option.

When I told my boss about this,he gave me a raise. So, I am trying to just go to work and do my job,and not let things get to me so much. I have told a lot of my co workers about my diabetes and out of pity I guess, they don't give me such a hard time. (I work in an office with all of the back stabbing, politics and butt kissing you can stomach)

Being a nurse's aid is a lot different, I guess you just can let things go. You have people that you are responsible for and have to take care of. I would imagine a cranky patient would be all that is needed to set someone off.

Try deep breathes, treat yourself to a massage, go to the gym and work out your frustrations. You need to take care of yourself first or you won't be able to take care of anyone else.

Like Frankie says: "RELAX"

All the best!

Re: back to work

I'm an RN who works 12-hr night shifts at a hospital and recently diagnosed Type 1. The endo told me just the other day I may have to change to day shift or find a less stressful job in order to get my BG under control. I told my nurse manager that & he jokingly said I need to find a new endo instead, LOL. He then seriously said he could move me to day shift if that's what it'll take to keep me and get my BG under control. I told him they just changed my dosages and I'm gonna give that a try first.
