concerns about steroid in Advair

I brought up the fact that I'm fifty and on the Pill and the fact that Advair has a steroid in it to the pulmonologist and he seemed unconcerned.

Does anyone know if this is a strong dose of Advair or not? I worry about the long term effects.

At any rate, the advair and the nebulizer are not really helping. I caught a terrible cold and cough last Thursday and the nebulizer actually gave me a coughing fit.

I don't know whether I have asthma or reactive airway disease. I don't have asthma "attacks." I just have a tight feeling in my bronchioles I guess they are and wheezing. And now with this cold I have everything worse.

Am just so discouraged. I've been on 3 diff inhalers, the nebulizer and now the Advair. My xrays of my throat and chest were normal.

I really hate all these meds. I can't even keep track of when to do them all because I am also on other meds for different ailments. How does one work or live outside the home and do the nebulizer every 4 freakin' hours?

Re: concerns about steroid in Advair

Well I’m not on a nebulizer, so not sure about that, I take advair 250 twice a day, total 500 a day, what is your dose? I have been on steroids for 20 years.. I don’t agree with them, but its better to breath, like I said in 2 other posts I will be trying something new again. Because like you I hate so much medicine.

Re: concerns about steroid in Advair

Well, I'm on Flovent...have been for about 16 years, albuterol for attackes and before any cardio (I'm a jogger) and it all seems to work well for me. I'm 61 now and on HRT. I don't seem to have any issues with any of it and neither do any of my doctors.

Getting a cold or bronchitis will make you sicker than most people. You didn't say how many puffs a day of the advair you are on. My instructions are to add one puff a day if I'm having bad allergies, a cold, etc. That seems to help. Doesn;t sound like you've had asthma long. You srt of learn what works for you and what doesn;t. Do you have a rescue inhaler? I might drop the nebulizer and just use the rescue inhaler when needed. The advair already has albuterol in it.

Re: concerns about steroid in Advair

My doctor told me that Asthma and Reactive Airway Disease are both the same thing. Your description of “tightness” sounds like Asthma to me.

I had trouble finding a corticosteroid that worked for me too. Most of them made me feel like I had cotton in my lungs caused me to hack and cough. Advair was the one that finally worked for me. Just to correct Tichtou, Advair does not contain albuterol which is a short acting beta agonist. It contains a long acting beta agonist called salmeterol (Serevent). I use Advair twice a day, when I get up and when I go to bed, so it's easy to remember when to take it. I also have albuterol as my rescue inhaler.

You might want to look into allergy testing or the use of another pill called Singulair. My dad has COPD and his doctor gave her a nebulizer, but he hated it. So, they tried to give him a portable nebulizer and he refused to use it too. So, he switched to Spiriva. It seems to be working well for him. I think it's the same line of drug as Advair.

I totally sympathize about taking so many drugs. Between my medications for my asthma, hypertension, hypothyroidism, GERD, rheumatoid arthritis, allergies, and restless leg syndrome my medicine cabinet is pretty full!

I hope you find something that works for you soon.

I Had restless leg syndrome, what helps better then medication, is diet, exercise, vitimins, and adding more blankets to your bed. with that, I got over it, maybe you can too I hope so.
