BP Medication & Weight Gain

My husband is not a happy man. He's taking Lasix and Monopril and has gained 6 lbs without enjoying himself - meaning he's not eating more or eating poorly. He's just gaining and we don't understand why as weight gain is not a side effect so we searched on line. Has this happened to anyone else? He's totally unhappy. Dr gave him a prescription for Diovan instead. The next question will be in another post. Thanks for any info you can share. By the way, the Lasix is not causing more urination - go figure?

Re: BP Medication & Weight Gain

If he is not drinking liquids the Lasix will not work good. That is proabaly the reason for the weight gain. After he takes the Lasix he needs to drink 2 or 3 glasses of liquid within the next hour to help flush out the water. (I average at least a gallon of liquids water, coffee, coke or juice)per day. He should go to the bathroom 3 or 4 times over the 2 or 3 hours.
Has he got alot of swelling in his feet and legs? that is usually a sure sign of fluid retention. It can work havoc on someones heart.

Re: BP Medication & Weight Gain

Thanks so much for your reply. No, he doesn't drink much water after taking the pill, nor does he drink much during the day. I'm going to make sure, now, that he does. Your reply is much appreciated.

Re: BP Medication & Weight Gain

Usually when taking a diuretic, like lasix, the med sheet instructs the patient to drink at least 6-8 glasses of water a day. Do review your med sheets and check with your pharmacist.

Again, I am concerned about the weight gain but I've addressed that when you posted a previous thread.

Re: BP Medication & Weight Gain

I concur.
Lasix doesn't work if one is dehydrated.
I find also that it produced the best diuresis in the morning accompanied by a walk. Maybe something is stimulating to the kidneys about walking.???

lolasmom,
In general ANYTHING that lowers BP allows the heart to pump with less effort>>less effort takes fewer calories>>>weight gain with the same dietary intake and exercise. Lower the exercise level because of tiredness and the situation gets even MORE favorable for weight gain.

To lose those pounds he will just have to eat less or exercise more, just like anyone confronting too many pounds.
