Foot ankle and leg swelling

I was on Norvasc 10mg with no side affects. When I got my Rx filled two months ago I was informed there was a generic available which is Amlodipine. In the two months I have been taking the generic I have experience a hoarse voice, extreme swelling of my feet ankles and legs, plus tiredness. I had none of these symptoms with Norvasc but my insurance company will not pay for Norvasc anymore. My Doc seems to think it's all in my head as the generic is suppossed to be the same med, only cheaper. Any ideas?

Re: Foot ankle and leg swelling

I've had the same experience... but I think I'm with your Doctor on this one. I started getting the swelling before I started taking the generic. I was taking Norvasc 10mg for two months before the swelling started. I only took the generic for about 10 days before I discontinued the medication altogether on May 27th. That reminds me... I need to tell my Doctor this.

Like you, I have A LOT of water retention in my feet and legs, and I'm always tired now. My energy level has increased quite a bit since I've stoped taking this medication... and the swelling has been reduced dramatically. I have never had swelling before I started this medication.

I have been taking Monopril for about 15 years now, and have never had any side effects from that medication. I'm currently taking 20 mg of monopril and 12.5 mg of HCTZ (water pill).

I am always willing to try most meds... but will not continue them if the side effects bother me.

My suggestion from one peer to another... stop taking this medication. Ask your Doctor about Monopril (fonosipril) and/or HCTZ. Monopril is an ACE inhibitor and I've never had an issue with it in 15 years.

Good luck.

Re: Foot ankle and leg swelling

Hi,

I'd simply insist on going on another medication, providing you need one! Have you tried making lifestyle adjustments first? Losing weight? You are lucky you had no adverse effects while on Norvasc. Mine had to be discontinued shortly after I was put on it. I am on Felodipine with no serious side effects.

Is there a reason for your doctor's preference for a CCB in the treatment of your hypertension? (A certain medical condition etc.) If not, why not consider trying another medication from a different class? What type of hypertension do you have and to what degree?

Re: Foot ankle and leg swelling

Kaco,

It's the same medication and you are having the most common side effect from it.
Time to bid goodbye to amlodipine/Norvasc.

I had exactly the same ugly swollen ankles with socklines that took an hour to go away. It is the only drug I've ever taken that made my ankles swell. I wonder what other parts of my body that I couldn't see were having the same effect.

Probably that hoarse voice is realted to swelling of the mucosal tissues in your throat.

Re: Foot ankle and leg swelling

Thanks for the replies and I think I will ask for a different Rx from my Doc, I have already tried quite a few with a bad cough, swelling, shaky hands just to mention a few side effects.
Lenin: I had noticed a swelling tongue but it seemed to go along with everything else being swollen. I was slurring my words and it now sounds like I have a gravely voice. I have been wearing flip flops as I had trouble with any shoes I wore and the imprints of shoes, socks take awhile to go away.

edited for spelling
