Question Anyone suffer nausea from Lactobacillus?

A little background -

On May 29th my mother had emergency surgery for a bowel perforation. Part of her intestine pushed up through the hernia, strangulated, and then ruptured. She had 2 feet of her intestine removed.

Of course, due to the bowel perf, she was on broad spectrum antibiotics for 5 days. Once she was moved out of ICU (on day 5 following surgery) she was given 3 more antibiotics though a pic-line for another 9 days.

She has had severe diarriah the past 2 weeks, going about 14-15 times a day.
Three different cultures have been done to test for C-difficle, which all came up negative.

We have purchased Culturelle in hopes that lactobacillus would help her diarriah. She's only had 2 doses and so far, all it has done is make her extremely nauseas.

Does anybody else have any experience with Culturelle? I bought Digestive Advantage for her to try because it doesn't have as much Lactobacillus in it, but I want to make sure we give Culturelle a fair chance to work before taking her off of it.
Any advice would be appreciated...

The only medicine she is currently taking is 12.5 mg Lopressor 2x daily, Protonix 2x daily, Glipizide 1x daily, Vicoden 2 qid PRN, and Allegra. She was also having Arginaid 2x daily until two days ago.

Re: Anyone suffer nausea from Lactobacillus?

Kerri -- I'm sorry Your Mother has been through such a very bad ordeal.

I think an easier type of probiotic to start with would be eating several teaspoons 3 or 4 times daily of a good yogurt like Stoneyfield Farm --plain it contains 4 additional active cultures that are very good to start re-establisting her friendly bacteria.
Also, Kefir is good and loaded with friendly bacteria.

Maybe later she can take the more concentated forms of probioticas.

God Bless----Harry

Harry, Thank you so much for your reply.

We are starting to feel desperate. Like so many people here, she has several different problems that are all related. The diarriah have her hemmorhoids completely flared up and bleeding. In Addition, her wound wasn't able to be sutured. Currently, it is 'only' measuring 11 3/4 x 7 inches as of yesterday. I say only because it started out at 15 x 11! The WoundVac has been a tremendous help for her healing... My point in saying all that is that making many trips to the bathroom is keeping her wound very sore also.

I'm definitely going to get some of the yogurt like you mentioned. I think the capsules might just be too much for her to handle right away. On the good side, even though it has made her feel sick to her stomach, her butt is getting a bit of a break - we're down to 10-12 times a day now.

Thanks again!
