contemplating hemorroidectomy

Hi. I'm 34 yoa and just got back from the doctor's office where my colorectal specialist just recommended a hemorroidectomy. I'm terrified....

I can't sit on a toilet at all without them falling out worse, and I can't squat for any period of time. My doctor said they're stage 4.

Anyhow, I'm new to this board and I just started reading some of your experiences with this surgery. I'm wondering if you would do it over, knowing what you know now and what you went through?

I'm an avid runner and the hems are starting to interfere with my running. I have a marathon coming up and I want to postpone the surgery until after the marathon.

My doctor told me that I'll be in pain about a month. I'm really scared and wondering if I should not have this surgery.

ETA: I guess I'm just wondering if it will be worth it. I'm not in constant pain and I'm not bleeding all the time. It just seems like the recovery time may not be worth the quality of life loss.

I'm wondering why you are even THINKING on this one. Seems a no-brainer--HAVE SURGERY--the sooner the better.

Wink Re: contemplating hemorroidectomy

it will not get better only worst, you will have pain and discomfort after
surgery but it will heal and you can live a normal life again, having had
many rectal surgery including this one i survived and so will you.the only
way i would have surgery is by scalpel done by a board certified colorectal
surgeon period, there is no room for error, then you will be fine.this is the
only sure way that you will fully remove it.you can live with it or fix but
worring about doing it will not get you any were.

good luck hope ypu make the right choice

Re: contemplating hemorroidectomy

I put this off for over 8 years. I am 43 and regret not doing it sooner. I had this done literally on 7/3. It's uncomfortable, but after what I've been reading - I am doing OK compared to most. I sandwiched this between 2 vacations, giving myself till the end of August for what I hope is a full recovery. I am still scared every time I use the bathroom, but overall it's not as bad as I thought. Good luck. Sounds like you are ready and over-due. I tried all the other procedures and it just prolonged the inevitable.

Re: contemplating hemorroidectomy

I had the stapled hemmorrhoidectomy on 8/6/07 in the afternoon and went home that evening...I am not as sore anymore but I think I ahve the UTI since I'm leaking on my bed! To top it off, I havne't been able to go to the bathroom and feeling quite backed up...I need help. I feel uncomfortable. I've tried the warm water thing, still on collace, eating and drinking my fluids...please help me. what should i expect? the procedure i did was called PPH. i am terrified after reading all the threads and scared to death of having a bm but really wanting to have one...i just keep passing gas every few minutes...i need help. i feel lost, alone, embarassed, uncomfortable and have to go back to work on monday (i'm an hourly employee). on that note, does anyone know if i can claim some sort of disability through the state? i have no disability benefits being an hourly employee...please help me...thanks.
