do you have Addison's & Hashimoto's

I am getting more confused. I was given thyroid med for Hashimoto's but the instructions were not to take thyroid med if you have adrenal failure. My dr told me to take my natural adrenal rebuilder for 2 weeks b/4 starting thyroid med.

I know the thyroid med makes me feel worse because of my adrenals but I was told to keep taking it. Does the thyroid med harm the adrenals? Do any of you take med for both? If so, how do they work for you? Thanks.

Re: do you have Addison's & Hashimoto's

I have no adrenals - so I guess that would mean they are in failure? and I take both a T3 and a T4 drug daily and have for years and years. I also have Hashimoto's antibodies.

I have only heard problems about adrenal problems related to the thyroid when someone is hyperthyroid - so too much thyroid. However, if you are taking a proper dose, you should be just fine. I have been on replacement thyroid for years and my adrenals have been out for a year and a half. They were sick for years before that! I have had Hashimoto's since I was a kid.

I take both just fine w/o any problem. However, I can not take the generic of sythroid. It just does not work for me. Best of luck! Kiesha

I also take both Synthroid and Cortef. No problem, and I've not been warned of any problems by my endocrinologist.

Re: do you have Addison's & Hashimoto's

Hi Sammi2,

I was first diagnosed with Hashimoto's 11 years ago (my, there seems to be a lot of co-incidence of Hashimoto's on this list), and am on nearly full thyroid replacement (Armour). It is important that your adrenal function is properly supported before supporting the thyroid. My MD worked with me using a metabolic temperature graph, available from a doctor's website, to track progress. In a nutshell, a low body temp indicates the thyroid could use more support; an unstable body temp indicates the adrenals could use more support. First achieve stability, then raise it. This worked for me.
