mom with bi-polar child

hello,i am a mother of a 13 yr old gurl who is adhd and o.d.d,but for 5 yrs we have tried all kinds of meds and nothing is helping my gurl,she seems to be goin down hill..we in the last 3 months have tried her on seroquel,abilify and now she is on risperdal 4mg. i had to admit her to a phyc hosiptal for help..i believe she is bi-polar cause i see in her what i seen in my sister as we was growing up.. we have changed my gurls meds so many times like every 6 months we had to change..now shes on 4mg risperdal..tenex and strattera.. she was takin off the adderallxr and ridlin since shes been in this hosiptal shes been there for 10 day what does anyone think i should try? maybe ask for bi-polar meds like lithium? thnxs for ur help..desprate mammma

I'm seventeen, diagnosed with bp at age fifteen after a misdiagnosis of depression. My best advice is to bring up your suspicions with your psychiatrist (pdoc) and explain the symptoms you have seen. Explain that none of the stimulants (ADHD meds) are not working and you'd like to try something used for bipolar. Most of the time, pdocs are reluctant to dx a child with bipolar, but they will use bp meds if it will help...

thnxs paige..i had to admit her to a phyc hosiptal the 31st of july she was just goin down hill i told them my concerns that the adhd meds wasnt working seems they arent listening all the did was upper her risperdall to 4mg.. i told them how my granny was and my sis is bi-polar.. and how i see alot og them in my gurls ways.. not sure what else i can do.. i feel maybe bi-polar meds will be the answer

I was admitted to a psych hospital in March '07 and it did wonders for me. Most hospitals involve individual and group therapy as well as medication changes with psychiatrists. They can properly diagnose her and get her stable before releasing her. For me, that was nine days, but it can vary - some kids are there for months, but that isn't very common in state hospitals because insurance doesn't want to cover it. :S Hopefully she gets well soon, especially with school around the corner.

she has been there for 10 days and sofar no new release date is set..she is still having these anger outbursts..thats her major problem i am hopeing they will at least try new meds and not just keep upping her risperdal..it didnt help before when she was on it but yet this is first time its been as high as 4mg..so we will just wait and see i guess.. i just need her helped and back home..yes she has one on one and group counceling..but she had that at her school too shes in day treatment center when shes home not in a reg school cause she threatened 4 school officials in middle school in march of this yr..so shes in a control treatment center when she is home..i just scared she will be released to soon and not tried on new meds... but thnxs for ur words it helps me some..god bless
