--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My wife ( 42 yrs old ) has very bad Pins & Needles mainly down the left side of her body ( hands & feet affected only). This has lasted for the past 3 year & started when she caught a flu type virus. Some days are ok ( rare ) but other days are bad with both hands & feet ( & pins & needles all over body at times ).

She has had a MRI scan which didn`t show anything, & the consultant informed her that she would have to treat this like a permenant injury.

Just wondered if there was anything else that we could try to ease the pain.

Would appreciate any info please.

Re: bad Pins & Needles

This sounds like nerve damage. There are many medications including Neurontin, Lyrica, and Cymbalta that all treat nerve symptoms. It could be a back or neck problem that is causing a pinched nerve. Has she had an MRI of her neck and back?

Re: bad Pins & Needles

just where did she have that MRI,her brain only?has she ever had an EMG and nerve conduction study done to try and determine just what nerves are actually affected and where this stems from?this type of test would at least show permanent injury,or limited velocity or something that can be impeding nerve flow.it would be worth it as it would narrow down at least some possibilities.i definitely argree with BFG that this IS directly related to the nerves themselves.there could ba many possible reasons for this to occur.does your wife have diabetes,or has that been ruled out for certain?or high blood pressure?certain other types of organ damage such as with the kidneys could trigger this as well.just some thoughts for you to ponder.

this does 'sound" like some form of peripheral neuropathy and there is another board here called neuropathy that you really should take a good look thru.alot of people on that board are suffering with the very same symptomology as your wife currently is.just scroll on down and read thru some of the posts there by others who are also suffering with this in their hands and feet.the fact that this is only affecting one side tho is a bit odd.just what types of actual testing has your wife had so far?FB

Re: bad Pins & Needles

Thank you for your reply, she had an MRI scan on the brain only & she also had an EMG ( I thought that was the same as the nerve condution study ), nothing showed up with both tests though. We think that it has something to do with the nervous system as her pain varies from day to day. It depends on how stressed out the body is, we`ve noticed that when her period is due, the pain gets worse. The symptons range from light sensation of numbness on both hands & feet to pins & needles all over body , random stabbing pains in both feet & hands & numbness. She developed this condition 3 years ago after catching a flu type virus which kept her in bed for about 7 days with high temperature, the pins & needles also started as soon as she caught this virus. We think that the condition that she has caught is called Myelitis, she is currently taken 30mg of Amitriptyline per day as this surpresses the nervous system as normal pain relief prescriptions do not work.

We will look into neuropathy as you suggested as we would like to seek another alternative for her to manage her pain rather than being stuck on taken this Amitriptyline for life.

Thankyou for your time
