New here, tonsillectomy sched for 10/25

Hi, I will be having a tonsillectomy on Oct 25 due to recurrent strep throat. I am wanting to learn as much as I can before then. It sounds like the weeks after surgery are a bear....

Any tips/advice you all have would be most appreciated.

Re: New here, tonsillectomy sched for 10/25

keep hydrated!!!!!
i took a sip of ice tea or water, every 5 minutes pretty much NON-stop for 4 days. The 5th day i didn't, and i do believe that's why the pain was not as tollerable.
Take you pain medicaiton around the clock for the first few days---set your alarm clock and get up(i didn't have to set a clock, i found that i haven't slept real well since the surgery, so that wasn't a problem)
I found the roxicet relieved more pain than the hydrocodone---i went through both bottles.
Tomorrow will be 2 weeks since my surgery and over all my experience wasn't ANYTHING like the horror stories that you will read here.
I lived off of popsicles for 3 days, and introcuded mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, even peanut butter sandwiches, oh and ramen noodles.
Take it slow, but the sooner you start eating soft food, the better off you'll be.
It amazes when i look in my throat to see what it looks like now VS the day ofs rugery..............amazing.

First tip, stop reading all of these posts. They will make things seem much worse than they really are. It hurts when I swallow or talk or cough. But not really that bad. I am day number two, actually hour 30. I've figured out my schedule. I take the pain medication every 4 hours. Two hours after that I eat. I like mashed potatoes or cream of wheat right now. Cream of wheat has a different texture than oatmeal and better vitamens and protein. Jello is my snack right before the medicine. Tried pudding, I didn't like it as much. Whatever it is, find something that you can swallow that will keep your motor running for four hours. Food will help you heal faster. Drink lots of water, constantly when you are awake. Keep the scabs moist. It helps them heal faster and helps avoid bleeding. This pain is no worse than my last sore throat. But it will be the last one. Good luck.
