Re: geodon

jdt,

Welcome to the board. Never heard of Geodon. I looked it up. It is for BP.

ADHD can mimic bipolar and visa-versa. But they are two very different disorders. They can co-exist, that is, one person can be afflicted by both. Some ADHD meds can worsen BP and BP can worsen ADHD symptoms. In that scenario Geodon can help with ADHD symptoms by controlling the BP.

Hope that was of some help.

Re: geodon

Thank you for the imput.
My grandson has now been put on depakote er. I can find not info on the use of Depakote er for addhd. His behavior has become very physically aggressive but the doctor wishes to keep him on this med. She feels his "depression" should be controlled first then she will handle his addhd. I am not at all sure that the "depression" he is having isn't from his inability to concentrate because of his addhd , which is the ring of fire addhd. He is also having side effects such as nausea, vomiting, headache, neck and back pain, stomach pain just to name a few. He has been on this med for 5 days now with no real improvement and a lot of negatives.
He was also put on Focalin 1 day later because the Depakote er was not helping his his frustration from the addhd and ability to concentrate. He had neuromuscular tics and twitching. He has now been taken off of the focalin.
I would really appreciate any help anyone can give. This doctor is now telling my daughter that she should consider putting him in a residental situation.

Re: geodon

I forgot to mention that there was the matter of large amounts of alcohol during the 1st 3 months of pregnancy as well as no prenatal care. Is this a possible complication for the addhd.

Re: geodon

jdt,

Sorry to hear about the ETOH affecting grandson's development. Yes, alcohol and/or drugs ARE devastating to fetal development. Not without feeling, just stating the facts, it's water under the bridge. What is done is done.

Helping grandson now:

You and your doctor share equally valid positions on ADHD management. Unique patient circumstances dictate whether to control the ADHD or depression first.

I've learned a lot from this board and at the top of my learned list is "Something else is often misdiagosed as ADHD."

Something I've learned from my work is "diagnostics is everything." I have on numerous occasions spent hours diagnosing computer related problems then seconds on the fix. The principle applies to metal health "bugs." An effective "fix" cannot be realized without an accurate diagnosis. Conversely all attempts to fix a "bug" based on an inaccurate diagnosis only make matters worse. The testimony of many of this boards members validate that my "diagnostics is everything" principle is sound.

I got a "feeling" grandson is misdiagnosed. A full series of psychological diagnostic tests would be a wise investment.
