Piriformis Syndrome

Hi, Anyone ever hear of Piriformis Syndrome? Just had an EMG which was normal. The dr. thinks I can have this now. He is sending me for an MRI of the pelvis. The Piriformis is a muscle that can be pressing on the sciatica. I have all the symptons. I never heard of it before. Looks like I've been doing all the treatment already. Just have not done the shots again. We will see. Just wondering if anyone has experience with this. I see the Neurologist for Narcolepsy but a different dr. in the office did the EMG. They say no nerve damage but why do I have no feeling of sharp pain in my calf and foot? I did not think to ask him because we started talking about the Narcolepsy. Thanks for any input.

Re: Piriformis Syndrome

oh Hessie,,,,this is the exact same thing that the neurosurgeon said to me last month... he thought it might be the Piriformis Syndrome ...and go get that MRI...yeah...he even had to call my ins. company to get approval for the mri... Well, I did all of that...and the MRI didn't show up anything!!
At least the MRI doesn't hurt.
If it is the Piriformis...I'm not quite sure what they do to help it...injection??? I thought they also said something about PTherapy...
I hope that your can find the cause of your pain soon...

Re: Piriformis Syndrome

Thanks for the info. My expectations are low that they will find what the problem is. I can't believe all these meds don't help either. I assume the shots will be my next step. Thanks for your response. It's good to know that other people had heard of these things. I start to wonder if the doctors just make stuff up after a while. LOL I feel like an old car sometimes. They check every part and wait to see if something doesn't work. It can waste a lot of time and cost a lot of money to get there.

Re: Piriformis Syndrome

Hi,
Just wondering what symptoms you are having for a doctor to say you have Piriformis Syndrome??? Are you seeing a spine doc?
I have heard of this as I beleive I have it, even though an MRI does not show anything. If they do a lumbar MRI and they see a disk on a nerve, they can say the sciatica you are experiencing is from referred pain. Thats what one doc told me awhile back, but it never explains the hip and groin pain, and pain in the troachanter bone. But i also have si joint dysfunction, and piriformis goes along with that.
What I have learned that the sciatic nerve runs thru the piriformis muscle, then down either leg, I just had an ultrasound done to rule it out but they weren't able to isolate the muscle. Ginger
