Question I'm only 39!

Hello all,

I am a 39 year old female with 2 kids. When I was pregnant with both of my kids, I was diognosed with preclemsia. Where your blood pressure goes sky high and you swell like a balloon.

My youngest child is 8 years old...and my blood pressure is still high.
(160/103) My doctor wants me to come back in a month to have it checked again, but I know it wont be any different, it's been steadily going up not down. Has anyone eles ever had this problem? What causes blood pressure to rise? What should I do? Does this meen I am going to have a heart attack? I'm pretty scared about this....my grandmother past away just last week because of a heart attack. Any advise?

Thank you CT

Re: I'm only 39!

I developed really high blood pressure during labor with my second child. It took months to come back down to normal and stayed normal until now. That was 3 years ago. Now at age 34 my blood pressure is high again, usually 120/95. So I understand your frustration! Are you taking a birth control pill? Maybe you are estrogen sensitive. I have actually gone off of my pill a week ago and am hoping to see a decrease in my bp. So far it has not changed though.

Re: I'm only 39!

I feel your pain too. I always had normal blood pressure, then during the delivery of my 3rd daughter it got high. I never had pre-E or anything, just PIH JUST during delivery. They checked it postpartum and it was 120/80, but then I had kidney stones (they formed during my pregnancies) and my b/p was high. Now it runs anywhere from 120-130's/80's. My daughter is only 5 months old so I'm HOPING maybe it will go away.

In the meantime I'm starting the DASH diet and exercising as much as I can so hopefully it will go back to normal. But if it does, then what? For how long? Can I have another baby (we really wanted one more). I'm only 32, not overweight and have never had any health problems before! It makes me nervous too!

Re: I'm only 39!

I had preeclampsia with both of my kids and really bad with the second. My bp has been high ever since. My doc said I was "predetermined" to have hbp and that just made it set in. Does that make sense? It runs in my family but I was only 28 when I had my second and I've been off and on bp meds ever since (6 years).

Re: I'm only 39!

I've been on BP meds since I was 32... pretty normal age for a lot of people who end up having high BP... and high BP runs in families.

Not a big deal. Just start taking an ACE inhibitor BP medication to start with, like Monopril (fosinapril). This probably has the least number of side effects of all BP medications. I've never had an issue with it... and have been on it for a long time.
