Muscle Spasm

I am posting this on here and I doubt anyone has ever heard of this happening but just on the off chance here it goes.

Last night I got the usual muscle cramping of my foot that I always get. It started to spread first up the underside of my foot then my calf then the back of my thigh right up to my butt. I couldn't believe it. I get a lot of cramping of my feet but never has anything like this happened before.

I have never heard of a muscle cramp travelling up the entire length of the leg starting at the toes and ending at the butt. Anyone else? I had an opportunity to ask my neurologist without sounding like an nutcase but I forgot....lol so now I am asking you.

Thanks
Pooby

Re: Muscle Spasm

Hi Pooby,

Yes I have had those! uncomfortable to say the least! If you drink a lot of carbonated beverages, stop. add a calcium pill a day to your meds and foot and leg cramps usually disappear, mine did.

They are caused by a lack of calcium, and probably made worse because of back and nerve issues, Baclofen is a really good muscle relaxer for cramps and spasms, I have done well on it. You might want to talk to your doctor about that. good luck!

HTH, Fabby

Re: Muscle Spasm

Yep. Make sure that calicum has Vitiamin D in it. The combination of the two helps with muscle cramps. Hope you feel better. These can be extremely painful.

Re: Muscle Spasm

Pooby.. when i get a spasm it is almost as you described! But mine can start anywhere in that path you mentioned and very quickly spreads throughout. And it takes FOREVER to let loose and I am sore for days after.

I also take a calcium/magnesium supplement to help ward these off. I can't take them like it is suggested, since I have had a few kidney stones in past years.. but when I take them.. i can "actually tell the difference" in my muscle relaxation. So it's a natural mineral our bodies need for proper expansion and contraction of our muscles, not to mention the help it gives to our bones, hair and teeth!

Sorry you had one of those.. it's an awful feeling! You have my sympathy!

Hang in there. Tammy

Re: Muscle Spasm

I use to take magnesium but it never did help. Also I am a milk drinker and eat lots of green veggies. I have high bone density so it is hard for me to think it is a calcium deficiency.

I even drank tonic water for the quinine and that didn't help either. I pretty much get cramps throughout my feet almost every week sometimes every day. My toes on both feet twist every which way. At one point my doc thought it might be estrogen related (I am in my 60's) and on HRT. Otherwise she thinks it is related to my back problems.
