Post Bunion Surgery tomorrow - Question!!!

After the surgery, should I be laying flat on my back for the first 2 days with my foot elevated or can I be sitting up a little bit with my foot elevated? Thanks for any help. Also, I know they are doing an ankle block of some sort. Does anyone know when the numbness wears off? I want to be prepared with my pain meds.

You can be sitting up - just keep the foot elevated. I never spent anytime laying down or in bed. I had an ankle block - just my foot was frozen. Didn't feel a thing. The freezing came out sometime in the evening but I took Tylenol 3 before the freezing came out and continued taking it for 3 days even though I never had any pain. The tylenol was probably keeping me from feeling any pain. Don't wait for pain, just take the pain meds and you should be fine. I finally stopped taking the Tylenol 3 on the 3rd day and just went on regular tylenol. There never was any pain - just some discomfort from the stitches - but regular tylenol took care of it. I had major bunion surgery, 2 permanent screws and a non walking cast for 6 weeks.

crutches and kissesuk - thank you so much for your advice. I will start meds as soon as I get home. Crutches, you impress me. No pain, just sore. I can deal with that. Let's hope!!! I'll let you know how everything goes, but I won't be able to get to my computer right away!

Thumbs up

Hi Scare de kat,
The very best to you on your surgery tomorrow. I was given a script for Vicoden...never used it, but opted for advil instead. I really took it to control pain for the first couple of weeks...took it 2-3 times a day in the first 4-5 days.

Good Luck...and when you are able to get to your computer..let us know how you are doing.
