Acid reflux at night

Hello everyone,

I had another bad night. I was sick with nausea, coughing, choking and feeling as if I was drowning. It really got to me after a while and I cried. I wonder if these things can get much worse. I was careful not to eat anything after 6:00pm. Even then, I just had a small piece of an oven baked cheese bread.
I haven't raised the mattress yet as suggested. That's on my list of things to do. I wonder if anyone else suffers from this and what you do to get a bit of relief. I am fine during the day with just nausea and a few instances of cough.

thank you,
Flowergirl

Re: Acid reflux at night

I definately get mine worse at night, of course when I am laying down. I have started propping my pillows up which helps SOME. However, I still get the sharp shooting chest pains when I am sleeping and some difficulty swallowing.
Are you on any medication?

Re: Acid reflux at night

Hello,

I'm new to the boards but certainly not new to acid reflux. I have been dealing with it since 2002. There are many things you can do to get relief. I understand how you feel because I couldn't sleep yesterday as well but there is hope. Go to HEB and get a bottle of Aloe Vera Juice (whole leaf) mix two ounces with a non acidic juice like apple or gatoroade. Start taking it before bedtime and then you can take it more often since it will stimulate your stomach. Also very imporant, try to cut on flour, dairy products, fatty meals and wait at least two hour before sleep. I hope this works

Take care,

Re: Acid reflux at night

Hello, K and Gamo! thank you for your replies.

K,

I am on quite a few meds, including aspirin, which is not great for stomach. I also take supplements. I often wonder how much of my problem can be attributed to taking the meds. A few have GI problems listed among their side effects.

I got sick while grocery shopping this morning. I'd had nothing to eat as usual as I have bad nausea in the mornings. While buying some cold cuts at the deli counter for the company that's coming tomorrow, I started to choke for no reason. This is starting to happen more and more often. Is this normal? The deli clerk was concerned. I really, really hate this! I have no idea what might have brought this attack on. (The sight of food? I doubt it). I was afraid to eat anything later as I had to go to work and did not want to be sick at work. I now wonder if I should bother going to bed tonight. I certainly don't WANT to. I know what's coming if I do. I can function on no sleep. It wouldn't be the first time.

Gamo,

I'll check with the health food store about the aloe vera juice. Can it be mixed with water? I don't drink juices because most are too sweet. I am on low sodium/fat/sugar diets. Thanks for your advice once again!

Re: Acid reflux at night

Hi there,
Why do you take aspirin? This is really really bad for your stomach. Just a small amount can cause bleeding in people who are suceptible to aspirin. Maybe you should think about the meds you are on and eliminate any that you think could be causing you more gastro problems. Hope that helps!
