Prediabetes

I had a fasting glucose test last May and it was 93. I just had another one recently and this time it was 92. I was told by the nurse that I have Prediabetes and she sent me literature in the mail on diet and exercise. She told me not to eat white flour, processed foods and to eat only whole grains, and lots of fruits and vegetables and whole wheat pasta. I read that Prediabetes is determined when you have a fasting glucose level of 100-126. Why would she tell me I have Prediabetes??

Probably because many medical professionals don't know anything about diabetes unless they specialize. You are right in that a fasting between 100 and 125 is considered prediabetes. On the other hand, the dietary changes suggested would certainly be good for you. They are good for everyone.

So I wouldn't worry too much about the nurses diagnosis, but I would also make the changes anyway.

Best of luck to you.

Re: Prediabetes

Maybe they're trying to invent pre-pre-diabetes?

Re: Prediabetes

Thanks, I guess it would be a good idea to watch my diet so the level does not get any higher... I don't have any history of diabetes in my family...

Re: Prediabetes

I have diabetes. I found out 5 years ago. I had prediabetes and it is NO JOKE. I had the same numbers. At the time I was in my 20's. I did not get diabetes until I was 59. I may have had it before.

Stick to the diet. It is a good diet for everybody, exercise and test your blood sugar. Get a monitor. That way you will know when to ask the doc to test for diabetes. If he/she wants to test yearly at the lab ask for it.

That way it will be caught early and you will live a long life.
