Question HBP Medication

My father was prescribed medication for high blood pressure, however, my father has been unresponsive to each and every medication! The doctor tries one, then another, then another and currently has him on 3 different medications at max dosage and STILL no response.

My question is this:

Is it true that once a person starts taking blood pressure medication they can never go off of them?

Usually if you have high blood pressure, you must take medication for the rest of your life. However, that's not always the case. Sometimes, if the high BP is caused by overweight, lack of exercise and poor diet, it's possible to get it down by addressing all those issues.

However, even if one or all of those things is the cause of high BP, it's a good idea to control the blood pressure immediately. If weight loss, better diet and exercise bring the BP down, then you can gradually reduce the medication to see if you still need it.

In your father's case, it sounds like his high BP is very difficult to control, so it's not too likely that he'll be able to stop taking meds. The important thing is that he and his doctor work together closely to monitor his BP and find a medication or combination of medications that work to lower it.
