Adult tonsillectomy - my recent experience

Now I will preface by stating: I hope this early posting doesn't come back to haunt me .

I had my tonsillectomy done on Thursday morning (12/20) at around 8:00

I have never been put under before for anything so I was nervous to say the least. Combine that with reading the horror stories from most others on this board and let's just say I wasn't too anxious to get it done.

I never really had any issues with my tonsils until recently when I began waking myself up from snoring (very heavy sleeper) and every morning for the last 6 months I have fought with constant mucas build up (hairballs) all throughout the day. My tonsils have always been abnormally large, almost touching the uvula when healthy, and certainly doing so when ill (not very often though)

My specialist (Dr. Lee - St. Claires Hospital - Schenectady NY) told me that there should be 2.5 fingers of space between them and have < .5 of a finger so although he never recommends adults getting them out, I would probably live a better life without them - so I said sign me up.

Anyway when I got there Thursday morning I got ready, hooked up to an IV, then given a sedative - then I woke up in recovery. That's all I remeber, it was great! I immediately began eating ice chips and talking without problems. I reovered for about 2 hours after waking up (10:00 - 12:00) then they sent me on the way.

When I got home I began my Tylenol w/codeine and my Antibiotic. As the night went on, the pain became worse. On top of which I have acid reflux so that didn't help things at all. And I was very congested. So sleeping didn't happen. If I tried to sleep sitting up the acid reflux would act up and my chest would feel like it was going to explode. If I laid down, the post nasal drip with drip into the back of my throat causing me to gag and cough (ouch).
I had nothing to eat, but lots of liquids.

Day 2 was much of the same but worse, was able to sleep for a couple of hours 2 different times. I would say the paing would not have been that bad (maybe 7 in throat, 5 in ears), but the other symptoms were making things worse - I wanted to cry. I beleive I ate a couple of popsicles and had some gatorade.

Day 3 - things started to feel better, my acid reflux and congestion had decreased and so did the pain. I ate sherbert, popsicles, and pastina. Very small amounts but it felt good finally to eat something.

Day 4 - today - I woke not feeling all that great, but that was because I finally slept for 6+ hours, and didn't have my Tylenol + codeine for 5.5 of those. I took it, and starting drinking and started feeling good. I would put my pain (with medicine) at 3 for both the ears and throat. I had some macoroni and cheese, banana (very ripe), part of a pop tart and some flavored water.

What will days 5-10 bring? I'm sure from what I've read nothing great but I will repost and let everyone else know. Bottom line is - I have done most of the suggested things from around these forums and it seems to have helped a bunch. I have a cool mist humidfier running at all times, I have cold packed my throat 3 or so times a day, have drank at least 40 ounces of cold fluids per day (probably should be more) I have not skipped any medicine (including while sleeping) and I've tried to be positive (hard). Oh yeah and the foods I eat I chew till they are basically fluid anyway. Good luck and hope this helps those who are going to get the procedure done. I will repost after day 10 and see if I'm still so lucky!

Re: Adult tonsillectomy - my recent experience

No I did not puke. Thankfully I had no ill effects from getting knocked out, and also have had no blood what so ever throughout the first 6 days. I how now got through another 2 days and had a nice Christmas dinner, including chicken, mash potatoes, deviled eggs, and a couple of cookies. I think my scabs will be falling off in the next couple of days - which I imagine is not going to be fun!

Good luck and don't sweat it. I seem to be one of the only "positive posters", but I think that's because most other "good experience" peoplearen't searching the web to find these forums.

Re: Adult tonsillectomy - my recent experience

You are a day ahead of me - had mine out on Friday 21st Dec and couldn't believe how ok I felt for the first few days but at times yesterday and increasingly today it is starting to hurt and I'm getting worried. Have read all 34 pages of a previous thread and am really scared now!! Am drinking as much as poss and just started chewing gum - something white came out of my mouth earlier - could that be a scab? Thought it was a bit early at day 5!? Also does that include day of op? If so I'm day 6 - just feel like trying to sleep till day 10 if possible!!!
Fingers crossed it doesn't get any worse for us!
