Question Sexual problems associated with medication

Hi there,

I was wondering if anyone has experienced determental sexual side effects due to the blood pressure medication. I am on Altace 2.5 mg a day and am experincing some difficulties. For instance can the medication make it difficult to achieve an orgasm or to have an erection? Any information would be helpful.

Hello! Unfortunately I am here to say that YES bp meds can and often do cause these side effects. I am on the female side of the spectrum and I have to say that although I love and admire my husband so very much and I feel closer to him then ever, I am REALLY lacking in the desire department. It takes a really long time to get going, and the climax is rarely achieved. I have read a lot of information on this problem. You can type in your med name to the search engine and it will give you all kinds of places to look. Good luck to you!!

Mojo -
This is, unfortunately, a not uncommon side effect of many high BP meds. However, you should definitely tell your doctor and ask that he/she try other medications for you. Not all high BP medications have that effect, and even the ones that are known for that don't necessarily affect everybody in the same way.

It's certainly not unreasonable to request that your doctor find you a medication that doesn't affect your sex life as much.

Hi mojo,

Yes BP meds can have side effects which include difficulty maintaining or getting erections. I have been on Toprol XL for several years , as a beta blocker, however it is also widely used for BP. While I had some minor problems maintaining erections before being place on this drug, the last several months I was not able to complete sex because of loss of erection. When I informed my Dr of this we tried a few other meds, but no improvement. He said he wasn't sure if was because of the meds, heart disease, or just advancing age (I'm only 53), and put me on Viagra, which has definatly worked.

My advice to you would be to talk to your Dr and let him know of this problem, and hopefully you can get this problem taken care of.

Good luck
