no way is that high. I'm on medication for high blood pressure and my doctor wants to know if it goes over 135/85 and that's being conservative. 140/90 is considered borderline from everything I've read. It's time for you to get a new doctor.

130/70 no way is that high. you should ask why he wants to put you on meds. also ask him what he considers high and what his definition of high bp is. there are certain stages of hypertension and 130/70 is considered normal (not optimal, but normal) Once over 130 then it is considered stage 1 hypertension, but you are not even there yet. get an opinion from another health care provider. even a pharmacist can help here. get some printed material on what the various stages of hypertension are and what the ranges are for normal and optimal, and show this to your doctor.

He could be seeking to put you on meds for some other underlying reason that he did not tell you yet, so make sure you get the full picture first.

As the others have told you, only hypertension should be treated with medication, and the border line to hypertension is systolic 140 or above OR diastolic 90 or above. Your blood pressure is barely in the category of "high-normal" blood pressure.

Thank you for all your responses. My Dr. feels that with my regimen of diet and exercise the #'s should be lower. This regimen may be masking a greater problem and the medication would enable me to get to the 120#. His quote "why kill yourself if one pill a day reduces your BP to healthier levels."

I don't agree. I don't know what the long term effects are of taking any kind of medication and I'd rather risk my BP at these levels than possibly create other health risks.
