Causes of shortness of breath?

For the past six or so months, I have been experiencing shortness of breath. I will make it known up-front that asthma and blood clots in the lungs have already been ruled out (CAT scan showed no abnormalities and the methacholine test showed only a 9 percent drop in my breathing). Physical exertion does not worsen my breathing, nor does being in an environment where common allergens - such as animal fur, pollen, dust, etc. - are present.

The shortness I feel is pretty mild - it pretty much remains constant. I need to take very deep breaths to feel as though my lungs are satiated, or I may need to yawn very deeply to feel relief as far as breathing.

This problem used to be much worse - I had chest pain, my heart beat very hard, I had a cough I couldn't shake and more often than not I had extreme difficulty breathing, where at one point I almost fainted. It has lessened in intensity in the last few months and it much more bearable. Now I only deal with the labored breathing.

I was put on albuterol, but it does not help me, and twice since this began have I had episodes where I had extreme difficulties breathing - both which scared me enough to prompt an ER visit and both which resolved on their own before I received emergency treatment. I've also never woke up in the middle of the night, unable to breathe.

I have no idea what is causing this - it can't be asthma, or else the albuterol would help me in some way. The only thing I have found thus far that aggravates my breathing is being out in the cold; I find myself sometimes needing to take more deep breaths than usual to feel okay. My mother told me she also had trouble breathing when she was my age, but the issue went undiagnosed and she eventually grew out of it. That's reassuring, but I want to do something about this right now because it irritates me.

For the record, I am not a smoker and am very rarely around those who do smoke (and even if I was, smoke does not aggravate my breathing). As far as my BMI/weight, I am definitely overweight, but not morbidly obese (I'm about 180 pounds and 5' 6"), so I don't think I'm heavy enough to warrant breathing issues due to weight alone. I have read that breathing problems are associated with thyroid problems and I am convinced I may be hypothyroid despite my normal TSH test reading.

Has anyone else ever felt this? Just difficulty breathing and really nothing else? I am at a complete loss over what is causing this and why it started out of absolutely nowhere.

Sorry for this being so long.

Re: Causes of shortness of breath?

I recognize you from the Thyroid Board, don't I? You can add this problem to your list of symptoms. Hypothyroidism often affects lung function in various ways. Before I was treated, I could inhale perfectly fine, but I could not fully exhale. So during vigorous exercise, I'd end up hyperventilating because I couldn't completely get rid of the "stale" air before taking another breath.

You may be having slightly different effects than mine, but the need to yawn is proof that you aren't getting the air you need, and the reason may be hypoT.

Re: Causes of shortness of breath?

midwest1,

Yes, I have also been posting on the thyroid board. I do know that breathing problems are symptoms of thyroid problems and I intend to bring allllll these issues up to my doctor next time I speak with him. But he is now suggesting putting me on anxiety medication because, based on what he said: "If it's not asthma and not a thyroid problem (based on my normal TSH test result), then it can only be anxiety".

I'm also looking into the possibility that my breathing problems may be heart-related, although it seems unlikely because I have no history of heart issues, nor do any of my relatives...so the heart thing seems most unlikely.

My issue is not exhaling, but inhaling; I feel the need to take numerous deep breaths or to yawn to feel like I have taken a full breath.

Thank you for the information - I'll update if I find anything out.

Re: Causes of shortness of breath?

yes I often have this! i get this for maybe a few days in a row out of a week, then it goes away for a week or less and then comes back again. but i mainly suffer this when i am having or going to have a panic attack. i'm not sure what it could be either. i have an anxiety disorder, and gets panic attacks often so I have problems breathing. infact i am going through this trouble breathing thing as I type and have got it again just yesterday. it feels like there is not enough air in my lungs. i have to keep taking really big breaths that looks like i am straining my chest. i have to push my chest real far out and up in order to get this "big breath" i feel i need. i also keep making myself yawn, but it really doesn't work because a yawn only lasts for what, a couple seconds?!

ugh... i really don't know what this is and i do not have asthma. it really is bothering me too because i feel there is not enough air in my lungs... i wish i could help you, but I really don't know what to say to help... i don't know how to help myself lol. hmmm... do you think you might be having a panic attack? i don't really know... OR maybe you are eating something you are allergic to? i thought about myself being allergic to white flour because for the past two days i have had ALOT of carbs, all white refined flour and I started up again with not being able to breath properly two days ago and still have it right now. it just came to my mind earlier that maybe white flour was causing this to start up again for me. maybe you are allergic to something and it is triggering this? now what is a thyroid problem? =/

Re: Causes of shortness of breath?

You may have a problem of "over breathing" (hidden hyperventilation). search this and see if it is your problem.

I suffered for 10 years with hidden hyperventilation before finding a doctor who recognized the problem. Three internists and 2 cardiologists did not recognize it.

Overbreathing causes anxiety. In other words it is the deprivation of oxygen to vital organs that causes the body to react with anxiety. Overbreathing blows off too much carbon dioxide. Our body needs a balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide in order for the red carpusles to release oxygen to the vital organs. Rebreathing in a paper sack balances the oxygen and carbon dioxide ratio.

Rebreathing in a paper sack 5 minutes ever hour for 3 months then as needed solved the problem for me. This was instructions from a Nobel Prizer Winner Hypertension Specialist at Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, Texas. Off and on I will need to rebreathe in a paper sack, but, for the most part the problem has been solved. Doctors do not know why breathing gets off track in some people.
