Strep throat + Gum & Mouth problems??? Scary. help!

I am a 20 y/o female in good health, about a week ago one night I got a very high fever & a sore throat. After two days of this I went to the doctor because I thought I had strep throat, so he did a strep culture. (I'm still waiting on the results of that, but a friend of mine has strep so I'm pretty sure that's what it is.) The doctor put me on 5 day Levaquin 750 antibiotics because he thought it was strep too..I am currently on day 4 of my Levaquin.

ANYWAY this is the weird part.

About........3 days into the illness my gums started to feel weird. Okay fine, I ignored it. THEN my gums got SWOLLEN and red. They are never swollen and red! Then I got 3 ulcers on my tongue, the kind you get when you eat acidic foods but I have not eaten any acidic foods!!

This is scary, and disgusting, and I'm wondering what is wrong with me. Can strep throat spread to your mouth? Or have this affect on your mouth? Has anyone heard of this? I can't even eat! It's been 3 days now.

I called the doctor but he was no help.

Thanks for any help!!!!!!!!!

Re: Strep throat + Gum & Mouth problems??? Scary. help!

this "could' just be a reaction to the type of anti B you are on too.have you looked up the Rxing info on levaquin?i am not really familiar with that one.it isn't one of the more standard anti Bs used for strep.calling and speaking with your pharmacy wouldn't hurt either.this could be some sort of illness related event or some sort of a sensitivity to this particular type of anti B.you really do need to know.you are right that this is not standard strep symptoms.did they do that quick strep test that only takes about 15 minutes on you or just the longer one?either way,you need to call your doc and actually ask whether or not this was even strep.that longer test, well you should have gotten answers by now.i do believe it only takes about 24 hours for them to know or not.you should have been notified by now.i would call them first thing tomorrow.in the meantime, anytime you have any soreness in the mouth, one thing that really seems to help is gargling with salt water and swishing it around in your mouth a few times a day.this just helps heal things quicker and feel better.trying listerine, something with an alcohol base is also good for pain since alcohol IS an anesthetic,it just helps to kind of numb things a bit in your whole mouth.this works for me really well with toothaches.

but you DO need to find out just whether or not the strep test was positive or neg for strep(they already knew the next day whether it was or not, just never called you).if it isn't,you need to be seeing your doc again for some other types of testing.you just need to know what you definitely have and where the soreness and the actual sores are coming from ya know?but also call your pharmacy about the anti Bs and any possible reactions they may have.good luck and please keep me posted as to what you find out,K? it could be an allergic reaction to the antibiotic. this can be serious. not to scare you, but my friend was allergic to an antibiotic and had sores in her mouth along with some other symptoms like a fever and let it go on for far too long until it became life threatening. i would call your doc and tell him ASAP.

good luck
