Question Anyone alergic to Sulfa Drugs? Help

I am very allergic to Sulfa drugs. I am interested in learning how other people with hypertension have managed to bring their BP down. What meds have worked, not worked, etc.

Also, I am very interest if anyone allergic to Sulfa has effectively used hydrochlorothiazide.

Thanks for the help.

So far, I am using 32mg/day Atacand (an ARB) and am titrating Cardura (an alpha blocker)up to 8mg/day (I'm currently at 4mg/day). This has yet to have any lowering effect on my BP.

I too am alergic to sulfa. I cannot take any blood pressure meds. 'No way, I cannot take the drug you mentioned at all, Sulfa in it or has the same affects. ' I now walk a lot. My BP is too high, but I will never go back on the drugs, They made my life hell. 'When they say to come in every two weeks to check my liver, I got nervous. I have many friends taking all this stuff and now have to take something for the liver too. ' The doctors get real nasty when you tell them of side affects and I am going to get another doctor.
Be careful if you are allergic to sulfa, check everything with your drugstore.

Thanks wolf. Do you or have you taken it? I had asked my pharmacists about Edecrin but they said there were several severe problems and that it was rarely used anymore. They said it can cause permanent deafness. ?? I am thrilled to have found someone the knows of Edecrin. Any more advice / info on it?
Thanks again!

I am allergic to sulfa but have been successful in using diuretics containing sulfa. I also use Norvasc, a calcium channel blocker. Current diuretic is Maxzide.
