Re: artiral fibulation

I'am 28 female. my episodes of afib started when i was 24. I know take toprol 50mg once day. I had episodes every couple of weeks for the first year. It was horrible. I had to get cardioverted. I stopped having episodes two years ago. I suffer from anxiety horribly now. That can make your heart pound and give you chest pain.

Re: artiral fibulation

fionacase... I'm 78 years old and have'tolerated' bouts of AF for over 25 years. These bouts would normally last from 3 hours to 3 days then end of their own accord. I'd experience this two or three times a year, but from last November it has remained a daily intrusion and, apart from the usual drugs to combat the AF I have recently been prescribed medication to thin my blood: this to lessen the chance of clotting in the heart chambers and possible stroke. I'm less anxious about it now but it can be a little disturbing when I first wake up because that seems to be when it's at its worst. I'm told by my doctor that, at least, 10% of people in my age group 'live' with it but I do find it reassuring to hear from the likes of yourself.
Queensland, Australia? I'm from the NE of England.....K (PS. I'm a fella)

I had my first AF about 3 weeks ago. I had to be cardioverted and they put me on cardizem. I had a very difficult time with it ..they gave me sleeping pills because of extreme anxiety. Now, my feet are swelling from the cardizem. Now they want to put me on a water pill too!
I became very upset two days ago and started doing research. The more information I understand - the less anxiety. So..from what I have concluded, unless you have heart disease, HB or prexisting heart problems..if you suddenly have an AF it is classified a "lone" afib. That's my story..no heart disease, no high blood pressure. I HAVE had for years..problems with depression and anxiety.
Therefore, I did find that when a person is depressed or anxious certain chemicals in the brain aren't working correctly. Then those mixed up signals are sent to the heart and "AF"! I have decided to try and come off the cardizem and try to negate these afibs with certain antioxidants, ie. magnesium. AND I am starting therapy to learn ways of dealing with stress and anxiety. The Doctors can say that they do not always know what causes them but I think that sometimes...you have to try and figure it out for yourself.
I wish all of you good luck in finding "your" answers and really appreciate your support that you give here at this site.

Re: artiral fibulation

Have you had a thyroid evaluation? Atrial fib can occur spontaneously but also can be a complication of a thyroid disorder. Your cardioversion will not hold if your thyoid is not functiion properly...you did not say this was addressed by your docs in your post....I am recently dx with a-fib (was a cardiac nurse for 35 yrs), and am on a blood thinner. After receiving radiation for breast cancer, my thyroid was affected. Must correct my thyroid problem before I can be cardio-verted..and I worry that my a-fib will become chronic...
